It's called "Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other" and available exclusively on iTunes. Willie's already gay-friendly, but after his tour manager of 30 years came out of the closet and after Willie contributed a (different) song for the Brokeback soundtrack, he decided it was time to release this gay cowboy song that he'd recorded last March.

Here's the full story from the Dallas Morning News: http://www.losthighwayrecords.com/e/willienelson/dallasMorningNews.html

(from the article: ) Over at Mr. Nelson's record label, Nashville's Lost Highway, there are no reservations or fear of controversy about releasing the song.

"Willie wants it out so we want it out," says Kim Buie, a vice president at Lost Highway. "What this song does is give credence to something that I think a lot of people have known for a long time. Being gay is nothing new. It's gone through history, whether it's out on the plains or back in Roman times. Society puts its own standards on it, but that song makes it OK."

Am I the only person on the planet that knows

Pansy Division recorded this song in 1995 on

their "Pile Up" album?

Now THAT was cutting edge!

11 years later?...by Willie Nelson?

...it's far from ground breaking.

I think the point was, as the article pointed out, that "the song aims to show Mr. Nelson's support for gays, particularly to conservative country-music fans." Do you really think country music has traditionally been as gay-oriented as this Pansy Division? :o
