Very moving story. Thanks, Rick, for bringing it to our attention.

I sometimes find myself wallowing in self-pity for having been a gay teen-ager in the mid-1950's (well, we weren't 'gay' then --- we were 'fags', homos', or 'queers'). Society didn't provide us the option of "coming out", it only offered us a "cure". After reading gladkov's diary I realize that a full thirty years separates his youth from mine, and while our culture may have made many strides during that time, it still has a long way to go.
