Did anyone else watch it? It's about an Episcopal minister with a lot of problems. He has an alcoholic wife, a gay son, a drug dealing daughter and his brother in law was a part in the disappearance of 3.2M dollars of church funds. I found it quite entertaining (particularly amusing are the frequent pop ins by Jesus)though I don't know how long it will last. I'm sure the American Family thing will do their best to get rid of it.

skrub..Definitely Entertaining. It's been a long time since anything on NBC has held my attention. Hopefully it will survive!

I can see it going to LOGO when going to "Rerun Heaven" also! lol :+

I thought it was very Entertaining. It shows that all families have problems. We will see how long NBC keeps it going, I really don't see it lasting to long

When in doubt I whip it out :+

Below is my short capsule review posted on the other thread. check the other thread as another poster after me included a description of every character and plot lines .

Well

I don't know about letting "them" win, but I just saw the show and it's very good. I like the wry sense of humor and the characters are all well drawn. Critics are citing a 6 FEET UNDER quality and I can see what they mean.

I have enjoyed Aiden since he was a young man running around bedrooms naked showing very brief cock shots in his films. He has matured well and has a real insight into this character that he plays.

All in all, I will set my TIVO for Fridays and NBC would be foolish not to let the show have it's run, gay characters or not.

I said in that other thread that this show has the potential for NBC to finally have their "Desperate Housewives". I think it made it, and I can also see the "Six Feet Under" qualities.

It reassures that NBC is capable of putting on a good show. Recent entries ("Ed", "The Office") had put a question mark on that.

This is a show I really enjoyed. I've got to agree with other posters that it has a "Six Feet Under" quality with the quirkiness and appeal of "Desperate Housewives".

There were several things about the gay character that I liked. First, he's not your drop-dead cute, A&F looking boy. Physically, he seems more realistic than other gay portrayals that I've seen. Also liked his comment to his Dad when he said, "Do I have to keep coming out to you every Sunday at dinner?" Another great line was his comment that he wasn't a "march in the parade" or in-your-face gay.

He seemed very realistic and was someone with whom I could identify.

Also found his younger Chinese brother to be kinda cute. Although that character appears to be totally straight, he does have a cute body and I appreciated the shots when he showed some skin.

The subplot showing the Grandmother with Alzheimer’s seemed very realistic and gave a good glimpse at how families deal with that disease.

The relationship between the minister, his father, and the female Bishop also grabbed my attention. Their interaction, as well as the controlling aspects of the relationships, seem right on target.

The only complaint I had was the number of ads. Seems like whenever you have a 2-hour series opener, you only end up with about 75 minutes of show and the rest in ads.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

You're talking about Christian Campbell and the movie "Trick".

When I first heard he was playing the gay son I wondered if he wasn't a little old for the "son" role (after "stick with what you know" went through my mind). But between hair & makeup, he fits the role although he was almost unrecognizable.

It points to something else about this show. The casting is remarkably spot-on. Very few new shows leave the starting gate with all the actors fully comfortable in a fleshed-out role the way this show did.

You could be wrong - I think it will catch on like wildfire and last as long as Six Feet Under.

It moved a bit too slowly for me. Also there seemed to be more commericals than normal, and long netword promos. But, still,

I enjoyed it. If I have nothing better to do on a Friday night,

I will watch again.

The one dissenting opinion:

I watched the whole two hours and felt like I continued to watch because it was like watching an auto accident: unable to look away. I was interested in the plot about the money and the relationships around the gay son; I just didn't like the characters and how badly so many people treated themselves and each other.

It's been a while since I've watched any kind of episodic TV (I think DAYS AND NIGHTS OF MOLLY DODD was the last thing I followed), so I think I'm an WAY out of the loop as far as the way things are on television.

On Again Tonight (Saturday)???

According to the newspaper, Daniel was supposed to be on again for another 2 hours. Paper didn't indicate if it was the same episode as last night.

But, I turned on that station and they're showing a rerun of Crossing Jordan.

Is Daniel showing tonight in other cities? Is it the same episode as last night?

The station that showed it last night is owned by the Mormon Church. Wondered if they pulled it.

That must have been old information in the papaer. It's Crossing Jordan, Medium and Law & Order tonight. NBC must have changed its mind about rebroadcasting the episode. Its also possible they may broadcast it on one of its other networks, Bravo or USA later.

Thanks for the confirmation. Glad the local station didn't make the choice to not show it.

I can relate to that reaction, as it was the same impression I had when I first watched "Six Feet Under", catching a "marathon" of first season episodes shortly before the start of its second season on HBO. I watched the first episode, though it was too overdone, that there could not possibly be a family THAT dysfunctional. Figured I'd watch the second episode, still shaking my head that this had to be the strangest TV series ever made. By the third episode, I was a die-hard fan.

"The Book of Daniel" definitely has some "Six Feet Under" qualities about it, including a family full of "train wrecks" waiting to happen. On HBO, SFU really didn't get that popular until the very end of the first season. On broadcast network TV, I have some doubts that NBC will be that patient. Unless the ratings are there for the second and third episodes, especially if the churches keep protesting and calling for boycotts, I can see NBC pulling the plug before its limited run ends. And that would be a shame.

I don't think it will be a winner right out of the gate, as "Desperate Housewives" was. This is the kind of show that has to "grow on you" a bit. I probably asked a dozen people (and not a religious nut among them) who seen it last night, and the reaction was almost evenly "loved it"/"hated it".

I also think the network promos interrupting the show were a big mistake. It may have made many less open to judging the show on its own merits. However, I'm sure in reruns that two hours will likely play in a 90 minute slot, no problem.
