Zellweger is no Judy Garland. For that matter, Liza Minnelli is no Judy Garland. Who cares?

 

 

 

Minnelli is her own performer, equally as talented... an EGOT. Not many can call themselves that.

 

Zellweger is a fine actress, but her voice was sweetened a lot in Chicago. CZJ stole that film and deservedly so. She was the only true hoofer there.

 

We care because it's the recreation of someone's life that we enjoyed/admired/etc.

"Judy at Carnegie Hall" was one of the best selling albums in 1961, number one in sales for several weeks. Unusual for a two-record live album.

 

I saw Garland perform at Boston Garden in October 1961 because of the album. And Judy Garland had a prime time TV show in 1963-1964.

 

Liza is very good, but she is not in the same league as her mom.

Judy and Liza were major talents. Renee Zellweger? I'm not seeing that. I get that Zellweger may want to work, may need to work. I'm not seeing a kind future for her in film. Whenever a famous actress alters her famous face so famously, it usually means an end to her film career.

From what I read, it was huge that Zellweger pulled off "Chicago" musically. Can't imagine why she'd want to risk comparison to Garland. And no way, she can top Judy Davis.

 

 

It seemed that they were men treating a woman as men tended to treat women at the time, as if they were stupid. She knew that and wasn't going to let them get away from it. Unfortunately, she had emotional needs as we all had emotional needs and she covered them as sometimes we will do. Fortunately for all us she was an incredible musical talent and could use her acting talent through music. Renee Zellweger is a very good actress but she is not the musical talent that Garland was. The question is whether we should hold her to that same standard or look for someone who comes closer to Garland than she does.

Never said that I didn't love "Chicago". Just like you, it and "Cabaret" are my favorite musicals of all time. I was just saying that RZ had to really work at selling it and in the end, she did. Agree with BN that CZJ stole the show and I think from again what I have read, there was some degree of tension between the two because RZ was so challenged both as a singer and a dancer and that was CZJ's background.

 

And as for Liza... well. Ring them bells, mother fucker!!! Liza with a Z is worn flat on vinyl at my house as is Garland's live a Carnegie Hall. Love that parts where she talks to the audience and the mike keeps making sounds like she's hitting herself in the head. "I know... I'll sing 'em all and we'll stay all night!!!" Classic.

Judy danced while the orchestra played "That's Entertainment." I can not remember exactly what she did during "Come Rain or Come Shine." You may be hearing the sound of Judy's shoes.

At one point a few years ago it was announced that there would be a Garland biopic starring Anne Hathaway (who can sing). I thought that was an interesting choice, but apparently that project went away. However, I doubt that the powers-that-be in Hollywood, with all the expense involved, would entrust this production to RZ if they didn't think she could pull it off.

I agree Liza was a tremendous talent. Too bad she became a caricature of herself.
