RE: In My Opinion

When grown men do illegal things with 14 y/os, guess who I think is to blame the most. Its kind of what I think that you're implying yourself.

RE: In My Opinion

this is quite a bizarre story, and even moreso now that more details are coming out. If his true motive was to "save" Justin Berry then I would have to say his convoluted plan to do it was rather idiotic. As he says now the smart thing to do what have been to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and let them handle it. why was he sending all the money and pretending to be Don Henley(!) to get inside the organization? It seems like during all that time Eichewald spent grooming his source and getting inside he could have been turning the issue over to the authorities to handle and it could have happened sooner.

I don't doubt that there are kids out there being abused. But I do doubt that it is as widespread as this story and the "To Catch A Predator" TV shows make it seem.

I wonder how much of his current predicament is real and how much is in his active imagination. Is he in therapy now? The article says that everyone around him knew he needed it but didn't get it at the time he was working on his story.

And that sort of naivety is exactly why online predators can flourish. Nobody believes it's a real problem.

I could dismiss the "To Catch.." series if it was one or two shows. But it was many shows over the course of A YEAR. They even repeated in some communities and had no shortage of "takers".

Note that NBC did not invent chat rooms. They didn't invent chat rooms frequented by kids. They didn't go into rooms posting "wanna lick my pussy?". They posed as kids chatting with other kids and nabbed adults preying on kids all over the US.

I suspect it's a far larger problem than any of us knows.

This reporter perpetrated a fraud on the NY Times and its readers. To believe that is not to support child exploitation. To believe that some children are themselves the worst exploiters given the circumstances they live in and the parents they have is not to suggest in any way that adults themselves should exploit children.

I don't think anyone here is saying otherwise.

This is a complaint?

All this may be true, but I do not condone NBC perpetrating this sting for the purpose of entertainment and rateings. They claim they were doing it to alert the public to the problem. I guess the financial aspect was never a factor in their decision eh?

I think a huge amount of the blame can be laid at the feet of the parents who have no idea of what their "little darlins" are up to and exercise zero control over them and their use of the internet. But not once did good old boy Chris Hansen even mention that.

>I suspect it's a far larger problem than any of us knows.

It probably is - but in today's society teenagers are not so innocent as to not know what's going down. They bait perverts and everyone acts shocked/disgusted when a connection is made. All of the men that NBC caught had been very explicit in their e-mails to the supposed teenagers as to what they wanted to do with them. If the kids had been properly brought up and had morals installed in them from their parents, there would be no one for the perverts to prey upon. They would have been told to get lost.

Once again, I blame the parents for abdicating their responsibilities.

RE: In My Opinion

I'd agree that the problem is far larger than anyone knows. But is that the case or do we just hear about it more? Certainly the internet has helped to facilitate the problem. With the media exposure we have these days everything seems magnified many times over.

Greater awareness is certainly better for protecting our children no doubt but it may be creating a false distortion of the extent of the problem. Please do not conclude that I am downplaying this matter. I am not, it's deadly serious.

Historically speaking, my assertion would be that our children are safer today than they were in centuries past. At one time there was a Victorian belief amongst some that to cure syphilis one needed to pass it on to a child. Besides child labor there was a tremendous amount of exploitation going on that would curl our hair today. In ancient times children were sold into slavery for the express purpose of sexual gratification. Fortunately we have advanced as a civilization in some areas.

But have you looked at how kids behave and dress these days? There are a lot of 12 year olds who pass for street walking prostitutes these days with their outfits. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan are role modles. All this has become socially acceptable and parents don't seem to have a care about how their children dress or behave. Parental responsiblity has been abandoned to some collective idea that the village is responsbile for teaching right from wrong. Then when something terrible happens there is outrage and anger at how society failed to protect them.

Our kids are exposed to so many influences these days that they mature much faster. And some of those kids are not as innocent as we may wish they were. The young man in this NY Times story comes across that way to me. He seems the smart manipulator and the reporter more of the bumbling fool with serious issues.

RE: In My Opinion

I think for sure kids are getting hit on online all the time. But how many of them are meeting pervy old men to have sex with them? I'd like to think that most kids are smart enough to not do that no matter how much the guys soliciting them would like them to. That's one of the issues I have with Dateline. I don't believe it's a realistic scenario. As the show has shown on numerous occasions once they are approached by their mark they go into a sort of seduction mode to seduce the seducer. While it certainly embarrasses the guys who are dumb or mentally ill enough to fall for it, I still have a hard time believing that there are many real, average kids out there inviting these guys over to their homes to have sex with them. When I was a horny 14 year old I was lusting after my classmates, not shlubby old men. And I can't imagine any scenario in which I would have invited one of them to my home to have sex with me.

Maybe I really I am that naive, or maybe we have become a society ruled by fear and hysteria.

I agree with that, and feel that teenagers know exactly what they are doing. I am not siding with pedophiles, or with people who want to have sex with teenagers, but I would expect that by the time a person is 13 they know exactly what they are doing.

There will always be exceptions, but when you have a teenager who goes on line to make some "fast money", and then blame the "preditor" I think there is something wrong. The "preditor" should be sent to jail, but the teenager should also be held responsible for his actions. It taks two to tango.

Huh?

When I was 13 I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

When I was 15 or 16 I was almost dumb enough to get in a car with a complete stranger. The guy said the he needed directions and offered me a ride. I was naive and had this stupid thought like kids at that age do that nothing could hurt me. I didn't realize that he really wasn't lost and wasn't just being nice until he asked me if I had ever had my dick sucked before. I was so shocked that I jumped away from the car and then he drove off.

Live & learn - bet your response would be different today.

Not really a complaint just more of a live and learn. We've opened our home and pocket book a couple times and although not badly taken advantage of still taken advantage of. But regardless I don't think that would stop us in the future to try our bests to help a kid out or adult. We've both been in situations where we were fortunate enough to have friends to turn to when we've needed help and like to do the same for either friends or those that we might meet who need a bit of help.

Hugs,

Greg
