Would someone please explain why every death of someone who is a celebrity is bemoaned as sad news, on this site????

The death of anyone is sad in the general sense of the word, but why do posters here feel the need to open a thread about how horribly sad it is that someone who was a celebrity has died???? It's only horribly sad to the immediate family and close friends, and just a footnote for the rest of the world.

I guess it is easier to bemoan the death of some self-indulged "celebrity" than to rant at the deaths of thousands every day from AIDS, cancer, heart disease, etc. Afterall, celebrities are someone that you "know", unlike your family and friends who have died, and bemoaning their deaths gives you a "look at me!" credence.

SHEESH!

Guest ReturnOfS

So many of our nation's icons have passed away this year.

Richard Pryor experienced hardships that people on this board can't even imagine, but still came out on top.

Rest in peace Mr. Pryor.

An icon??? Richard Pryor was an icon???

To whom? All the free basing crack cocaine addicted losers, who are so stupid, that they set themselves on fire in their never ending quest to attain a higher high????? and a result, throw away all that they worked so hard, against all odds to attain????

Yeppers, put that dude in the pantheon of admirable icons!!!!!! :-(

"Richard Pryor experienced hardships that people on this board can't even imagine, but still came out on top."

What an assinine statement to make!! How in the hell do you know what hardships any other person on this board has experienced in his life, much less what the hell hardships they can imagine??? And just who are you to judge them, and state that they didn't come out on top in their lives/professions???

To quote Emily "never mind!", as you would probably just post more assinine observations in response. :-(

Probably because that celebrity has given the person much joy through their art or whatever it is they do. Richard Pryor had a lot of problems but he was also a brilliant comic who made a lot of people laugh. Here's something else I just read from one of his obits:

"But Pryor's comedy has more than entertainment value. When he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett, Jr. credited Pryor as "the single most reason for us making it in this business. He made it possible for us [black people] to be in this business on equal terms." Composer Quincy Jones called him "a pioneer. . . who made us understand the truth about us." Indeed, Pryor's material is so socially astute and confessional that he continually expands our notions of what may be perceived as funny."
