RE: Brokenback Mountain is Oscar Frontrunner

I've seen the trailer (which you can catch at http://www.brokebackmountain.com ) and it looks like a "silo of queer corn" but it's won a bunch of prizes so far, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. It also played in the Toronto festival, and all the reviews I've seen from there were raves.

According to the official site, it'll open December 9, probably only in NY and LA. I know it'll play in the local art theater here in San Jose on the 16th.

And as long as we're on the subject, Mysterious Skin just came out on DVD and well worth checking out. Gregg Araki finally made a decent movie.

It will be playing here in KY so your cosmopolitan comment would be greatly appreciated by the Chamber of Commerce and Mayor. ;)

RE: Brokenback Mountain

I saw the theatrical trailer for Brokeback Mountain this last weekend. It looked real good as did Heath and Jake!!!!! I am a real sucker for a good gay love story.

Obviously, whoever this is never went to a gay bar in Denver on week-ends! Many are almost wall-to wall with gay cowboys and others from Wyoming.

Anne Proulx, who wrote the story Brokeback Mountain is based on, is not real popular in Wyoming (where she has lived part-time for the last ten years)as she has taken on one of the central myths about the west, the tough macho cowboy, and turned it into- the horror!- a gay love story.

I just hope the movie is anywhere near as emotionally engaging as the short story......and the preview I saw ( esp. a brief glimpse of the "shirt" scene) almost had me in tears already.

It is playing in Denver at the Starz Film Festival Nov. 19th, but was sold out almost immediately. Damn! I'll have to wait for the "wide" opening just like everyone else.

I'll probably be wrong, but I can't help but feel that this movie is going to have a big impact..........

"Arriving with nudity and explicit gay sex scenes between two cowboys,"

Are we to believe that the above happens between the two stars?....if anyone has seen this, just how much nudity and EXPLICIT gay sex is there?.....DETAILS PLEASE.

Well, hold on now. It's entirely possible. Isn't he old enough to have actually known him? :+

I agree. In context to how the trailer was edited, that scene was profoundly moving.

Well, don't feel like the Lone Ranger. I get the very same feeling and think you may be right on target.

I doubt there is anything more then longing eyes, hugs and some kissing. In an interview in one of the NY area gay free mags (got it at Splash) there was interview with Jake. He said that him and Heath got the distasteful kissing scenes done quickly and at beginning. He also said that Heath's girlfriend (I think the article says that she plays Heath's character's wife) had to coach Jake and Heath how to kiss. She told them you have to kiss like you are kissing a girl, long and sensitive not fast and hard kisses. So we will see.

Based on what they showed in the trailer, sure looked like they really got it right about you believing these two cowboys love each other deeply and try to make the best of it while having a conventional marriage. I am really looking forward to this movie.

On MovieCityNews.com, their link to the Drudge piece referred to him as a "Gay Aggrandizer." This must explain why he has links to Anderew Sullivan and Rosie O'Donnell. He also gives Streisand headlines every couple of months.

As for the movie, I have missed out a couple of screenings, but I'm going to wait until it opens so I can go with a group of my friends. If the movie has anywhere near the impact of the original story, I'm going to cry my eyes out.
