This has been driving me bonkers.

Some iPhone users running the latest version of iOS 11 can’t type a capital "I." That means that millions of people who were trying to text their friends, “I got my new iPhone X!!” over the weekend were actually sending out this message instead: “A [?] got my new iPhone X!!”

The iOS 11.1 bug affects the autocorrect engine on phones, and changes a capital “I” to an “A” alongside an unreadable Unicode symbol.

Try the following steps:

  • Open Settings. Navigate to General -> Keyboard Text Replacement.
  • Tap the Add button in the toolbar.
  • In the Phrase field, enter the uppercase ‘I’ character.
  • In the Shortcut field, type the lowercase ‘i’ character.
  • Add the text replacement.

This workaround fix should mean that the system prioritizes the manually-added user text replacement over the weird garbled mess that iOS is errantly suggesting. Users will have to wait until Apple releases more information regarding a permanent bug fix for this problem.

The workaround fix does not seem to apply for all users afflicted. You can also try disabling the emoji keyboard, as the bug appears to be related to emojis somehow.
