I think that is an odd expression. Virginity can be given or taken but not lost. Something lost can be found.

It's an antiquated concept from the days when people assumed there was one and only one way to have sex and originally only referred to the female's hymen.

 

Today it's IMO obsolete and it leads to ridiculous things like teenagers having orgasms with each other six ways to sunday and calling themselves virgins because they didn't insert Tab A into Slot B.
