Were it not for the worst of the AIDS years in the US, many of these amazing songs would be contenders. Sadly, it must be "I will Survive" if only because of the strength it gave people to survive the impossible, at least for awhile.

"Over The Rainbow" is one of best song ever written, but it ends with "why can't I?"

Still, I vote for it too.

Well, maybe... but not that Garland claptrap! This one:

But I think my favorite use of the song came here:

Why is Garland's version claptrap? In person, she sang "Over the Rainbow" as she did in "The Wizard of Oz," not as her own personal experience or biography.

Fine, let's leave it there because I never mentioned Garland until a hour or so ago.

It's interesting watching that clip. Jennifer Holiday & Loretta Devine have swapped body types over the years.

I was fortunate enough to see the original cast, then saw it again with Holiday's replacement, though I don't remember who that was. The first time I ever saw Holiday perform that number was on SNL, shortly after Dreamgirls opened and she became a sensation.

Yeah. I think that occasionally there is a song that someone takes and makes it their own and no one will ever be able to sing/act it as they did, ever.

Guys most of the songs mentioned here are meaningful, poignant and even sad. God knows “nobody but nobody” loves Edith Piaf more than I but her songs fit in all of those categories.

I vote for YMCA or Boys on Boys, both are fun, sassy and in your face and that exactly what I would want in a gay anthem.

I always thought it was over the rainbow. Most of the others turn up in drag shows so often that I'm tired of them.
