There was to be a Broadway musical version about a decade ago, which I think would have been really fun. Composer/lyricist Adam Guettel was working on it, along with William Goldman, who wrote the film's screenplay and of course the original novel. But the 2 of them got into a dispute on finances (Goldman wanted the lion's share of the shares) and it was shelved.

Guettel may not be a household name, but his grandfather, Richard Rodgers, certainly was. He may be best known for his tony-winning Broadway show The Light In The Piazza. This show would have been his first real attempt at true comedy (Piazza, Floyd Collins, and his Myths And Hymns all have their lighter moments, but are essentially dramatic pieces), and I was very excited to see what he'd do with the material. Unfortunately we'll never know. And given what happened with the dispute, I doubt we'll see anyone else try a musical version in Goldman's lifetime at least. But someday, someone should try it.
