I'm making a sweet & sour pot roast with buttered noodles, Derma, and matzo ball soup. Maybe a jewish "friend" will drop by ?

If by derma you mean kishke.... I might just invite myself and hop on a plane.

L'Shana Tova :) Just ran over to Bread Bakery in Union Square to pick up two babkas (chocolate and apple) and a festive challah for my jewish friends at the office.

Saw "Union Square" and raised my hopes. Alas, wrong square on the wrong coast.

...missing the easy & prevalent access to buy good jewish food. One of the few disappointments of SF Bay.

Yeah I mean Kishke, it's my all time favorite, but I admit, I buy storebought.... Everything else is made from scratch...

Dear deepestfeelings.com. Thank you for providing some beautiful Jewish High Holiday cards.

Perhaps next year, you shouldn't depict a Hanukkiah on your Rosh Hashanah cards.

For our non-Hebrew speaking friends--

May all of you be inscribed in the Book of Life for this upcoming year of 5778.

I had never heard of babka until the Seinfeld episode. By 'festive' challah do you mean one with raisins and cinnamon? I love those!!

I don't think I had ever heard of Derma before-or at least not often enough to really know what it was. I had to look it up.

I'm not really familiar with rugelah either-but I've heard of it.

Funny story-my Mom had a Jewish Cookbook divided up by sections. One section said Yom Kippur Recipes. I went to the section. It said something like, "Why are you looking for food to eat on Yom Kippur?":p

How funny. If you hadn't mentioned it, I probably would have just assumed it was the usual 7 branched menorah.

From my blog.....

HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH

Happy Jewish New Year to my friends and family. My wishes for this new year are the same as most peoples’: health, happiness, peace…… But I also have one, much less important wish this year. It’s really rather trivial, but in honor of the name of my blog, here’s my Rosh Hashanah rant.

I grew up in a Jewish community. Each year, whatever the holiday, the grocery stores were stocked with the appropriate items for the Jewish holiday. That’s not the situation where I currently live, although I reside in the suburbs of a major metropolitan area.

Each Fall, as the Jewish High Holidays approach, boxes of Matzoh reappear in the local stores. If they could read Hebrew, or checked the fine print on the packaging, the store personnel would see that its marked “Kosher for Passover”

I know the local store management meant well when they put the Matzoh on display. I bear them no ill will, nor do I judge them - I don’t expect local store personnel to be educated in the nuances of every culture. But….

We live in the information age. And every grocery store is part of a huge chain of stores. Can’t someone at the corporate offices of those chains provide some guidance? Isn’t there a corporate messaging department, or an executive buyer for ethnic foods? How about a memo from HQ to the stores:

Jewish High Holidays are approaching again in mid-September. Please check that you have ample stock in the Jewish and Kosher section of your ethnic aisle. And, please be culturally sensitive - this is not an opportunity to unload all the extra matzoh and Passover boxed mixes left over from last Spring.

So, my extra wish this year is that the local stores stop trying to sell Passover matzoh to me because they think they should do something to recognize the Jewish holidays. I know how trivial this is. Its certainly not of major concern to me. Candidly, I saw the matzoh on display in a store yesterday, realized it happens annually, and chuckled to myself that it would be an amusing thing to kvetch about on my blog.

More importantly…. Good Yontif

I am fortunate I have easy access to "jewish" foods all year round, and have learned to enjoy a good matzoh brei on an average ole day. Sometimes I make it sweet and sometimes savory, but it always makes for an enjoyable meal that takes me back to those special family holidays. I figured WHY WAIT for the holiday? It's just another Carb....

Rugelach, for those not familiar, is a cookie/pastry of a rolled/filled cream cheese dough. Prune, cinnamon-raisin or chocolate chip are common.

Anything that Tastes real good isn't good for you. Fuck it, you're gonna die anyway.. I love my Matzoh Brei....

I dont know that its bad for you. It just has an after effect.

I cook with schmaltz. Im no healthy food advocate.

And now, I think I'll make chopped chicken livers as a treat for myself.

I had heard of it. I had thought it was just matzah crumbled into scrambled eggs. I now see you make patties out of it.
