Just watched, mostly through tear blurred eyes, the documentary "Larry Kramer Love and Anger." Ran across it on HBO quite by accident. It was hard to relive the fear, anger, bewilderment and dismissals of the early AIDs epidemic. As a physician who was there at St. Vincent's in Greeniwich Village and then at other hospitals in NYC and surrounding areas, I look back and think I could have done more.

The NY Times also had an interesting article about Mr. Kramer which was published a bit more than a month ago. ttps://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/19/nyregion/larry-kramer-and-the-birth-of-aids-activism.html

What I got from this is, in the future I do not want to ever look back and think I could have done more, the time to do more is now.

So thanks Larry. You can never be too old to learn that now is all we have.

There are some really beautiful documentaries that came out a few years ago that you might be interested in.

My favorite was United in Anger - by Jim Hubbard and Sarah Schulman who did an ACT UP oral history project years back. I felt like this was the best movie to get a sense of the feeling of the early activist response to AIDS, it inspired me in my HIV activism to always reach for something greater.

We Were Here also made me bawl - it's the San Francisco story of the beginning of the AIDS epidemic told through the voices of survivors - many people who worked in medical care or prevention - as physician I'm sure you would have much to relate to

Longtime Companion

Parting Glances

I was in the East Village during the 80s when AIDS decimated my community, my friends.... (My diagnosis did not come until 2003 when meds were plentiful - a LOT of baggage associated with that, as I am sure you can imagine!)

Feel like I was there from the very beginning.... these two films are very much of that time.... keep the tissues handy.

I have watched the documentary many times.

HBO also has an excellent documentary on amFar, which features Dr. Mathilde Krim. Krim and her late husband were very wealthy members of the Democratic Party. So she comes across much more likable and polished than Larry Kramer. It is almost impossible to dislike her. I watched that documentary a few days ago, but do not see it listed now on HBO.
