£1m for kiss-and-tell Everett

By Nigel Reynolds, Arts Correspondent

(Filed: 21/05/2005)

The British rights to a warts-and-all autobiography by Rupert Everett, Hollywood's most famous openly homosexual actor, were sold to Time Warner for a reputed £1 million.

The huge figure, which will be substantially topped up when American rights are sold in the summer, was reached after nine major publishers competed for what is billed as one of the most explosive books of 2006.

Rupert Everett's memoirs should be 'revelatory'

Everett, 45, has confessed to having been a male prostitute and has led a Wildean love life within and outside the acting world.

Time Warner said: "He promises that it will be the sweetest kiss-and-tell book ever published."

Ed Victor, the actor's literary agent, showed 22,000 words written by Everett to tempt the publishers. He said the memoirs would be "revelatory" and added: "This is one of the hottest auctions I have conducted."

Everett, the son of an Army officer, was educated at Ampleforth. He hit the headlines when he disclosed in 1997 that he had become a male prostitute when he was picked up outside a London Tube station at the age of 16.

He was also a heavy drug-user and described how he was drawn more and more into the world of prostitution.

"The first time out is fine," he said. "Then you are knocked about a bit on your third night. You go back four days later with a bruise and get knocked about again but you've got a knife so you're OK."

Everett, 6ft 4in tall and once a regular escort for Princess Margaret, said he did not accept that he was homosexual rather than bisexual until he was in his twenties. He had been linked to Bianca Jagger, Paula Yates, Cher and Madonna, among other famous women.

Time Warner would not confirm what it had paid but a senior publishing source said: "If the figure is right, Everett is going to have to reveal quite a lot to earn the money back."

>Mmmm. Can't wait! Everett is a brilliant and viciously

>witty writer, as only the British manage to be!

I have to agree. And if anyone wants an example of his humor, pick up a copy of "Hello Darling, Are you Working?" It came out in the ealry 1990's and obviously semi-autobiographical. Its the story of an actor / male escort and the insane adventures he winds up getting involved. The ending has an interesting tiwst which I will not spoil for any potntial readers.

Its likely out of print now but I sure a good cybersearch could scrounge up a copy. I pull mine out every few years and give it another read when I really need a laugh.

There are quite a few available at half.com. Half is a great place to find books, both current and out of print.
