If I run across even 1 website that lists a person as working undercover, I discount ever seeing that person. I also know that this could be sabotage on the part of a disgruntled client. Should precaution always over-rule desire?

Sooooo...I've never run across a website that stated a person was working undercover. How did you find this?

Regarding precaution always overruling desire, I have a problem with the word "always." For me, I look at the probability that a bad thing could happen and make my decision based on whether I want to take a risk that the bad thing won't occur. For example, in downtown Phoenix, the probability that you can look both ways, not see any traffic, and cross Central Avenue against the light without getting hit or ticketed is close to 100%. Therefore, I will cross Central Avenue against the light after looking both ways and seeing no traffic. A couple of miles north, the probability dips down to near zero percent that you will not see traffic and so I would not risk walking against a light.
