Hey all,

Just wondering. If one has a canker sore in their mouth, does it increase the risk when performing unprotected oral sex? My mouth is usually healthy and everything, but I'm really not sure about this one. I did find one source that mentions them as a cut in the mouth (which I never thought they were), so I'm thinking the answer might be yes, but wanted to check here in case anybody knows.

Thanks. =o)

The mouth is a particularly excellent source of infection, not only for what you mentioned but even for those who engage in protracted oral hygiene before having oral sex.

Hey, lollipops are cool, unclean or questionable dicks are not.

Using a condom for oral, in my opinion, deflates the experience (no pun intended), but <Gawd it tastes so much better without the rubber.

Use your better judgement. If it doesn´t feel right (or SMELL right), back away.

If you´´re comfortable, then go down and suck like there´s no tomorrow.

I think it's a moot point as I'm starting to feel like crap in general and think the plans need delayed regardless (which hopefully will work out - I'm quite lucky this wasn't a hardset date - lol).

But thanks for the input. =o) Still interested in any replies for future reference.

Simple answer: Do not... repeat, DO NOT... perform unprotected oral sex with a "canker sore." Would you suck a dick with a sore on it?

Would suggest having it checked by a dentist or oral surgeon, particularly if you are a "frequent flyer." ;-)

Totally Agree with ARBEE..ANY SORE in the Mouth should be checked out..IF it does not disappear in a Very Small amount of time! And definitely NO Foreign Objects (Tongues-Dicks) should be inserted.. LOL :+

Thanks for all the great info and links everybody. Really appreciate it, and good to know for sure it's NOT safe to have sex with a canker sore. Don't worry - wasn't feeling good yesterday anyway, especially after my first post (better today; Nyquil is the best stuff in the world...lol.) But yeah, it wasn't a good idea and was called off. (It wasn't anything set up officialy yet, so that was good at least, and especially after I didn't feel good, didn't want to risk giving it to someone else.)

I'm not too concerned about the canker sore (or perhaps cold sore). I think I just have some sort of cold. (And I had no particularly risky exposures lately, so I don't think it's anything STD-related or serious). No need for a doctor if it clears up by early next week.

Thanks again. =o)

Now I am not a doctor but from what I do know about canker sores they are not cuts in fact no one actually knows what causes canker sores…If you get a simple prick to the gums it will cause a canker sore yet some people it wont…Doctors also believe it to be caused by nutrition and stress.

The best thing to do if you are sucking and the person cums in your mouth is swallow so that the cum will not come back into the contact with the gums and statistically you are at less chance to get HIV.

As for not letting someone kiss you or suck you while they have a canker sore…good luck chances are you have and never knew it.

No question - hold off until the 'sore' corrects itself. In all likelihood, it is not a true canker sore but some reaction to any number of possibilities. The mouth is very susceptible to abrasion which, in turn, reacts to whatever foods, acids, enzymes, etc happen to be in the mouth at that time. For example, I'm sure you've caught yourself absent mindedly chewing in the side of your cheek or lip and noticed how quickly a welt develops. But when you stop gnawing on it, it quickly goes away. That's the amazing thing about the mouth, it's amazingly self-correcting. True 'sores' are the result of something much more ominous and are very quickly self-evident.

That said, it is still a rawness that is much more susceptible to infection, and for that reason should be regarded as a temporary breach in your mouth's protective barrier which is it's naturally occurring flora. It is the flora that protects you, so do NOT brush your teeth, or floss, or gargle before engaging in oral sex. Not only could brushing and flossing create micro abrasions, cuts and tears, but toothpastes and gargle temporarily kill off that protective flora. If you want to freshen your breath chew gum, or fill your partners nasal passages with quick setting cement. Bottom line: when in doubt - keep it out!

Please pay the receptionist on your way out.

I haven't seen this recommended by any medical source. Have I missed it?

As a general policy one might want to consider this further. Especially those that are candidates for acid reflux disease, 'ulcers' or who might have just eaten some foodstuffs with the potential to scratch or otherwise irritate the throat, esophagus, and stomach. (Doritos or Habaneros anyone?) Sores or scratches in the esophagus or stomach are open portals to the bloodstream. The existence of them may not always be readily apparent unless they have been aggrivated.

Healthy gums have evolved as a natural barrier to infection. Less than healthy gums begs for one to forego the oral pleasures sans condom. Remember to brush and floss daily... waaaay in advance of any potential action. At other times rely on a good antiseptic commerical wash or a shot of good Bourbon or Scotch tempered with a little branch water. Cheers. :p

Thanks guys. I think I just picked up a brief virus that manifested itself, along with a slight temperature and muscle aches, with some sort of mouth sore. Still not totally gone, but I won't be doin' anything til it is, and I appreciate all the advice I got on this board.

Regarding oral hygiene, I do brush, floss, and use listerine daily, but on days where I'm going to see someone, I generally do it early on in the day and skip the flossing just in case. (I still make sure I have a clean mouth - I just skip the flossing so I don't inadvertantly cut anything; likewise I don't shave everywhere I normally would just in case too).

I too had never heard the swallowing is better advice and also heard the opposite. I'd be interested in knowing your source.

Anyways, thanks again for helping to steer me in the right direction. =o)

Greg/Seattle's link offered excellent advice regarding canker sores and oral sex. However, it seems now that your oral lesions are not canker sores (which don't cause fever or muscle aches). It's probably a benign virus such as Coxsackie (which isn't caused by cock-sucking, by the way), but it could be an original HIV infection. The first HIV infection can present with fevers, muscle aches, and oral lesions. You may wish to check an HIV viral load (not an antibody test, which will usually be negative during the initial infection). I'm wondering if Greg would be willing to share what symptoms if any he had during his initial infection?

RE: Hot time in the old town tonight?

I was saying you should swallow because if a person cum's in your mouth then the likely hood is that it will shoot towered your throat and to spit it back up will make the cum come back into contact with your teeth and gums…which is were you will micobrasons in your mouth.

Our gums have evolved yes but our gums did not equate a brushing our teeth which will cause some bleeding…and as for brushing and flossing way before any action, well hey sometimes you don’t know when your going to get lucky.

Unicorn, I've read HIV boards before enough to know that symptoms are NEVER the way to diagnose HIV as they can be too many other things. I agree in certain cases there could be similar symptoms on onset, but a lot of people NEVER have any symptoms at all, while others have what feel like the worst flu of their lives. Additionally, I think the symptoms would have lasted longer if that was a possibility. (And I don't think a sore in the mouth is one of the more common ones anyways.)

Additionally, I think HIV is ruled out in this particular case. I've tested way past necessary on my last risky encounter, and the only (few) recent encounters were entirely oral without any ejaculation (or even appreciable precum) and a healthy mouth.

Just don't see that as a possibility for this one. I still plan to get my regular test in a few months though.

Appreciate the concern, but I'm not worried about that as a possibility.

Just want to make a distinction between cold sores (aka fever blisters) and canker sores. While they are both in the Herpes family, cold sores are very contageous. Cold sores can be transmitted to one's partner as oral or genital herpes, which you then have for life.

Canker sores are not transmitted as canker sores, but as indicated by other posters, can facilitate the transmission of STDs because there is a break in the skin. So you can view canker sores as you would any other break in the skin in the mouth.

Canker sores usually start with a reddish blemish or small break and can develop into a larger grey painful area, which resolves itself in a few weeks. There are remedies which kill the pain and resolve the problem faster.

I dunno what it is exactly, but it seems to be getting better. Besides the brief bout of what seemed like the cold, no other symptoms. Think it should be totally cleared up soon.

I can only offer anecdotal evidence (i.e. what worked for me may not work for you). When I get Canker sores, they seem to last for about 11 days. A leather sexpert friend suggested a couple of things - first, the medicine they use for shingles (which my uncle, an M.D. kindly wrote a precription for), and secondly, brushing my teeth frequently.

The antiviral med seem to cut down the healing time by 50% (5 days) but was inordinately expensive.

Keeping my teeth brushed did seem to lessen the burning sensation.

Stangely enough, once my dentist convinced me to use an electric toothbrush on a regular basis, the incidence of my getting Canker sores seems to have decreased markedly.

Generally, when I have them, I won't go down on anybody.

Dear God, yes!!! Some other things to remember:

1. Don't cross tracks when driving 18 wheeler and you hear the CHOO CHOO sound.

2. If scary music appears from nowhere when you're showering, run like hell. Not into the basement.

3. Don't have sex with siblings. Babies often look like Nixon.

Any other questions ... please feel free to contact me directly so I can laugh at you in person, rather than through cyberspace.

Whatever the lesion, it is best to have a ........

Very GOOD Immune System to combate any virus.

Viruses are generally weak.

There are many supplements to increase the Immune system's ability to combat foreign proteins, like viruses. And it is important to keep the body in an alkaline state, rather then an acidic state with refined foods like sugar, alcohol, processed foods, coffee, drugs, etc. In other words stay away from everything you know is not good for you. This is why daily fresh vegetables and fruits are important!

Vitamin C in high doses helps very much. There are many other formulas now available like the reishi mushroom formulas, etc.

You can find many at the enlightened pahrmacies or health stores.

I take just about everything, that will help stay healthy, since they also work on preventing heart disease, cancer, etc.

RE: Canker Sores & Oral Sex?

>in fact no one actually knows what

>believe it to be caused by nutrition and stress.

Funny this topic should come up. I've had a VERY stressful last few weeks (due to an exasperating workload), and mid-last week did in fact develop a canker sore, which I find I do indeed tend to get only when I'm under a lot of stress.

The tough part is, some oral sex would definitely help relieve the stress for me...lol...but, of course, I have this damn canker sore, so that's out of the question until it heals...:-(

Of course, the fact that one of my other vices is coffee probably doesn't help either...but I'm not giving everything up...:-)

I actually take some excellent vitamins and some other supplements, so I don't really feel that nutrition is a problem.

I do have my share of coffee and soda. But I try to eat healthy, etc.

I've had canker sores in the past, but they don't happen often. Maybe every couple of years I run into one. *shrugs*

Appreciate the tips though. It's already mostly cleared up.
