I use a VOIP number for certain things. It's not a bad idea unless you don't care if people can easily background check you. Not to mention these guys may not want their real numbers ending up in google results. However, you're right in the fact that 9 out of 10 guys that are fake use them.

I don't use the fact the he has a VOIP number as the sole discriminator. However, when it is connected to other discriminators like:

• Pics found on Instagram, Tumblr, or some other place that seems to be inconsistent
  
• Ad is from BackPage or Adam4Adam...especially the ones that claim pics are 100% real
   
  
• Name Changes
  
• Information gathered from other people's experience on the forum
