What is "follow" for?

I am following some people here on this forum because they often post something I think very interesting and meaningful. I thought I would get some notification when they have new posts after I followed them, but it never happened.

 

So, what is "follow" for?

It sends a message to a person whose posts you like to read that you are following his posts. When I first got that message a few years ago, it creeped me out, because it was from someone who struck me as a little crazy, and I didn't know what it meant either, so it had to be explained to me.
