Is message therapy effective for back pain relief?

I have been suffering from low back pain after the delivery of my triplets. It was a C-section and I have tried several medications to ease the back pain. I find it very difficult to do my day-to-day activities because of the pain. I have to take a rest of minimum eight hours a day. Otherwise, the pain will become severe and I will have to go to the hospital. I came to know from a friend of mine that massages are really helpful in easing the back pain and am planning to have a physiotherapy treatment from Toronto. Is massage therapy effective in treating back pain? Please give some genuine replies and suggestions. Thanks in advance.

My favorite is a warm stone massage and it helps. I use Therma-Wraps on my lower back on bad days and usually a heating

pad for 10 minutes when I first wake up. Sounds like your pain is worse that mine though.

I hope you're enjoying motherhood and that your children are healthy! You didn't indicate how long it's been since your C-section but I would not recommend a massage unless you've spoken with your doctor. I think your safer and better bet would be to see a PT to discuss the nature of your back pain along with exercises and techniques you can use to stabilize and strengthen your back to reduce pain. You might also want to speak with an OT who might be able to give you some training on work simplification, energy conservation, and setting up your house and routine in such a way to prevent further injury.

 

I'm an Occupational Therapist myself. My experience with new moms has been largely focused around moms with babies in the NICU, but I can say whether you're a new mom or an old man, OTs are skilled at helping you be able to do what you need to do in daily life while saving energy and reducing the risk of injury.

 

Massage may be something that is helpful to reduce your pain, but if you then return home to a demanding schedule, children who need care and attention, and your current home set-up, you may end up undoing any benefit that you received from the massage. The PT can help you strengthen and stabilize, the OT can help you save energy and set-up your home and routine to reduce pain and injury risk, and then the Massage Therapist can use their skill to reduce your pain and relax your muscles.

Being male I can't speak to your specific discomfort, but I'm no stranger to back pain. The kind of discomfort you are describing would encourage me to seek immediate professional medical/physical insights before massage therapy, particularly if your discomfort is increasing rather than diminishing over time. Perhaps there are pain-management prescriptions that can help you short-term. Wishing you the best and speedy relief ("I feel your pain").

As a chronic low back pain sufferer (fusion due to spondylolosthesis; discectomy due to torn disc; chronic degenerative osteoarthritis), once the source has been decided massage will make you feel better but not necessarily treat or cure your problem. Try to stay away from opioids.

A combination of stretch, yoga, acupuncture - long term! - seems to be the most widely recommended therapy for this. Perhaps even add Pilates for core strengthening.

Massage therapy is a safe and effective way to treat muscle tension related pain assuming you seek out a legitimate, trained, licensed massage therapist. Chiropractic is another way to go but selection of a provider needs to more diligent.
