@latbear4blk, P.S. Any time you see a guy travel away from his home city and advertise in wherever he's visiting, that's a pretty strong marker that he's legit and professional. Shady dealing won't really cover the costs of travel, short of outright criminality.

I don't think that's a truism you can live by. We've all seen reports of those scammers/crooks who travel in packs over the years. I'll bet they are still advertising on M4RN where they were most obvious. And then there are the multiple ads on BP for visiting black escorts, in particular, showing incredibly muscular guys who at meeting turn out to be totally fake.

If you don't mindo me asking what is your criteria for finding out if they are legit or not?

I have no experience hiring from backpage, my friend. When I posted those links I did not mean that I think they are legit, but that If I were hiring I would be researching them.

Made that clear, what my criteria would be? Nothing special, I would do the same I do before hiring from other sources. I would research for reviews, and I would post a 411 in The Deli. If I decide to contact the guy, I would ask for a FaceTime conference. Same stuff I always do.

Yes, I was discussing individual guys working alone. Your advice to avoid the well known traveling wolfpacks is excellent, but seems to describe a different situation.

I'm not trying to be argumentative here. I was using the wolf packs as an example. But to my mind if guys traveling in a group can be fake so can individual ads.

Well, yes, of course they can. As reported previously, I've hired half a dozen guys off rentboy who turned out to be using stolen pics that in no way resembled who greeted me at the door. So it's a universal risk, not one unique to backpage.

Putting it more broadly.

I used to try to live by risk avoidance.

Finally, in middle age, that way got old, and I saw that a life strategy of risk identification, assessment, and mitigation could be a whole lot more enjoyable, easier, and less stress-inducing.

Exactly the goals my previous strategy had aimed at, but badly failed to deliver.

When I finally started to think consciously about life strategies, and to see that I had, and could exercise, some freedom of choice here -- and of course had been doing a lot of that already, but without much conscious, volitional control or oversight -- life got a lot more enjoyable and fulfilling, at the same time as a lot easier to live.
