A smiling, playful and yet poignant ice skating performance on Russian national television has created a social media firestorm — because it is holocaust-themed.

Tatyana Navka, a famous champion ice skater in Russia and the wife of Vladimir Putin’s press spokesman Dmitry Peskov, did a holocaust themed skating performance Saturday on Russia’s “Dancing With the Stars” equivilant, “Ice Age” pairing with famous actor Andrey Burkovskiy.

Donned in striped pajamas and the Star of David, the couple smiled and frolicked to the tune of “The Beautiful Way,” which includes lyrics like, “Smile, no matter what they tell you.”

Navka took to Instagram, calling it “one of my favorite performances,” but her followers thought something quite different.

I especially love the comments in the link....

"Twisted….strap yourselves in world…."

"Sometimes I hate the internet. But never before have I hated figure skaters."

Brings to mind "Springtime for Hitler."

But that was meant to be as tasteless as possible!!! The Producer's plan for the show was for it to be as offensive to everyone as possible!!!

I guess they like to be "politically incorrect", that's all they can do to feel good about themselves... maybe they can also drink and forget all their problems.

I do think one has to view this through the myopic Russian view that all "art" and "artistry"...and in fact all "life"...is suffering.

Having survived a short stint in Moscow...I can tell you that they would not see this as a fancy carefree ice dancing diddy about the Holocaust.

This would been seen by the average Russian as a painful and deeply moving tribute to the sacrifices made by casts of millions.

Hard for Western...much less American eyes to comprehend.....but true.

They are a bizarre people indeed. Their "art"?......even more so.

In general though (and this is just a question) why did the skaters not just do a routine based on the suffering and killing of the people of Kiev or Stalingrad. Or any of the thousands of deaths of partisans who died to save Russia. Instead they chose to don concentration camp uniforms emblazoned with the Star of David. "Tasteless" cannot describe it. It goes well beyond that.
