Well I was just informed that one of my babies is about to turn 30.And he wants to have a B'day bash in Hawaii with 20 or so of his nearest and dearest.

I have never been to Hawaii,I do not like the idea of Hawaii-and especially the thought of Honolulu.

But I love this boy,and I am very proud of him,and he may not be in my life as long as I would like(if ya get what I mean)so I will do this.

My question to the learned travelers on this board-what is there to do in Honolulu if you are not a sporty beach type-and is there any gay scene?Any bars that might be of interest to readers of this board(wink wink)

< I do not like the idea of Hawaii

No offense dude, but a choice between Pasadena and Hawaii ... ?? }(

Take him to Maui ... closest place to paradise I've ever been. :+

Not huge gay scene but Hula's is still around, just not like it used to be and not in the same place.

Also take a look at

Honolulu has a lot of things to see it is a major tourist destination(trap) after all. For one thing the climate is very hard to beat-I normally spend the last two weeks in Feb there as I'm sick of winter by that time.

Other things to do

Pearl Harbor

Polynesion Cultural Center

Bishop Museum

Iolani Palace

Punch Bowl

Diamond Head

Day trip to Big Island and Kilauea(sp) see the volcano do its thing(I'm not really sure what its doing right now, but its one of the few places to really see lava flow if your not a vulcanologist)

Go up to Kauai and hike or helicopter the NaPali coast

Drink Mai Tais

Last year there was a gay cruise I think in late Feb or early March-Steven Draker can give you the scoop on that, I think its an annual event.

Since it is tropical there are a lot of hot guys walking around with very little on- and I'm not talking just on the beaches. You can get whiplash if you're not careful.

Just hang with sunny weather(usually) and highs in the 80's and lows in the 70's - they break out the parkas if it should venture below 70. You can get a rainy spell- but it couldn;t be worse than what your getting right now. I've spent probably a total of 6 months time in 2 week increments and never had more than 3 rainy days in the 2 weeks.

Well,Pasadena(which is really a very lovely town btw)is where I live-so it is not a choice like that.

When I vacation I generally like more metropolitain destinations-it makes for a change from the peaceful, bucolic setting in which I live.

The thought of thousands of tourist being duped into beliving that the landscaping provided by the huge hotels is natural tropical beauty is not my idea of fun.

My boss vacations in Maui 3 weeks a year.Yes that looks a little better, still not true nature, but a lot "classier"than Waikiki beach.

But my friend and his partner want to be where the gay bars are,and the only gay bars in HI are in Honolulu.

I will go,and I will try to enjoy myself-just hoping there might be some "fun"to be had of a sleazier nature.

If escorts would just loosen up, try to enjoy an opportunity and not focus so much on treating everyone like an ATM, then maybe they wouldn’t find things so bad." BN

I've lived here in Honolulu since 1976. Most of those years right in Waikiki. If you don't like the tourist scene, then rent a car and go arond the island to the north shore. Very rural and very natural. Drive up through the rain forests on Mount Tamtlus and hike through it. Only a stones throw from Waikiki, but very rough and rugged. Explore some of the local neighborhoods, just like home but with all the various ethnic influences. Lots to do besides tourist stuff if you will do a little research.

Best of all though, the weather can't be beat!

I just wanna know if you are paying for all 20 of his nearest and dearest!!!!

If so, I wanna know how I can apply to become one of your babies (and I already passed 30, so you will have fewer bdays to deal with, hehe).

Not much of a gay scene in Hawaii. If you come, bring your own fun, and enjoy the food, culture, weather, and scenery.

Marc, the "baby"that is turning 30 makes more $$$$(and spends more$$$$)than I do.And his partner is a millionaire,,,,that is one of the many acomplishments in his life that I am proud of.

So no,,,,I will not be playing Malcom Forbes here ;-)

Honolulu

Waikiki is still where the nightlife is. Hula's and Angles are the two bars of any note, and both have strippers/go-go boys on various nights. The drag shows at Fusions and Venus can be fun. Queen's Beach is still popular. The Diamond Head beach and hillside area, infamous for outdoor and nude fun, is risky nowadays because of police surveillance. Take a drive around the island if you want to get away from the city...For more info, check out the local rag at http://www.odysseyhawaii.com.

RE: Honolulu

Thanks to all for your helpful comments and links-I do appriciate them.

Now i just have to find a certain someone to take this trip with me.Seems the big expense will be the room-I am looking at either the Renaissance or the Marriott as I am partial to Marriott properties-they seem to be at opossite ends of the beach, and both are around $200 a night.

BTW,,,,Marc Anthony-you should check out some of the cover boys on the Oddessy mag.(link above)just your cuppa!

And I see my friend Nathen Hamilton is now in HI-So I know at least one person there!

RE: Honolulu

If you want to be on Waikiki beach and near to Hula's and Angles, stay at the Marriott Waikiki Beach. The Renaissance is not on Waikiki Beach and a couple of miles from the bars (and Waikiki nightlife). The Marriott has been recently renovated but it's a very large hotel. Check out the W Honolulu for a smaller boutique property that's close to Waikiki beach and the bars...
