As a long term escort If I had to use one word to describe the biz now it would be: "transition."

Things are rapidly changing and it seems some guys are willing to change with it and compete but others are retiring and/or moving on to other business or professional opportunities perhaps a bit earlier than they had planned. This is all the fallout of the fall of rentboy and the rise of the apps and hook up sites which have created more opportunities for guys to meet without hiring.

Just wondering how my peers are all doing? I'm down at my new apartment in Ft. Lauderdale and I have been crazy busy setting it up so haven't been able to work much. Finally ready to roll!

I always enjoy the challenge of opening up a new market and while Ft. Lauderdale certainly isn't new to me as I grew up here and had the first 6 years of my escorting career here it has been a while and things have drasticly changed.

Thanks Bryan. I think the total lack of response to this thread seems to tell us all we need to know doesn't it? Seems guys are dropping out of the biz daily now at astonishing rate. It is attrition..... who will survive? Competition is what makes America what she is. It is one thing to have friendly completion between escorts in a fair market biz but when we are asked or forced to compete with all the APPS that maybe too much to ask.

I’m not an escort, but I do have thoughts about the state of the industry (although I admit that they may be completely wrong):

 

First, in the Seattle market, my impression is that there are more advertisers than ever. These days, there are often 50 or more escorts advertising on RM, whereas a couple of years ago it was probably more like 35-40, split over three sites: M4RN, RB, and RM (I don’t actually keep records of this stuff, but that is my general recollection). The largest advertising platform used to be RB, but almost all those advertisers promptly shifted over to RM and virtually none to M4RN, which seems to be in precipitous decline here.

 

Second, the typical hourly rate that escorts charge for their time, while holding steady for a long time at between $200ish and $250ish, has increased recently. Not long ago, $300/hour was sort of an outlier at the high end. And while that rate is still basically the top here, it is much more common to see it. Most likely, this mirrors what is going on in the broader economy: compensation was flat for a long time while the labor market gradually recovered from the “great recession,” but now that unemployment is low and cities like Seattle are booming, there is more demand for labor, and we are starting to see the signs of broad-based wage growth as well as the beginnings of inflation.

 

Third, this industry is always in “transition,” and a significant percentage of escorts “retire” after just a few years in the business. For many of them, this is a relatively lucrative option compared to other employment alternatives when they are in college or in their 20’s. At that point, they have relatively fewer options because they are just starting out and their services are also in the most demand. While there are successful escorts of every age, I think it is fair to say that as one goes from his 20’s to 30’s to 40’s to 50’s, the number of interested clients probably decreases. The most successful escorts have a transition plan that acknowledges this reality.

 

Finally, other than the first few weeks afterwards, I don’t think that the RB raid has really had a significant impact on the industry in terms of the number of clients, the number of escorts, or the price that clients pay for escorts’ time. At the same time, other advertising platforms, including RM, M4RN, and massage-oriented sites, have scrambled in trying to adjust to the shifting legal landscape, often in ways detrimental to clients, escorts, and masseurs, but to date, my impression is that this is more an inconvenience than anything. Still, in my opinion, the RB prosecution does present a great danger to both escorts and clients going into the future, particularly now that there’s been a guilty plea. As I noted in these threads, this prosecution is part of an increasingly aggressive effort by the government to claim (falsely in my view) that escorting is equivalent to prostitution and that all escort advertising websites should be shut down because they are criminal enterprises that knowingly promote prostitution. While inconceivable a few years ago, it is increasingly possible that all escort ads may be driven off the Internet within the next few years. And while that would not end the industry, it would drive it underground and make it more dangerous for everyone involved.

Business has been okay. But concentrated. I think location plays a big part. I traveled throughout the summer but lately I've been anal (pun intended) about going forward. Between social unrest and hurricanes and elections, I've sort of hunkered in until things calmed down. I've had calls and texts almost daily in areas I've advertised, but...an announcement to all the universe: It's been crazy. I'm still going to be traveling soon...but the advertised dates weren't syncing with My actual ready dates. But everything should be situated by end of this week.

 

A word about the noticeable increase in advertisers on Rentmen versus rentboy: rentboy ads were expensive. Between $40 and $129 a month. $300 if you were in L.A. or NYC. Travel ads were $12-$50 per 5 days! And no bells and whistles like Rentmen has.

 

Rentmen is less expensive and more efficient. Therefore more guys can afford to advertise there. I hope Rentmen can maintain their great prices, however if it changes it would likely be simply due to the cost of hosting and censoring the increasing costs of ads. I was around when Rentmen first was created and it's great to see them growing into the #1 escort site as they have become.

Personally, I'm ready to just get my travel on. Can't wait to get set up in San Francisco later this month. Maybe I'll just stay out there for awhile...hoping its for the better. Nashville is such a dry market, and a recent study showed that hotels in Nashville have become more expensive than New York and other major cities. But considering the fact that the escort market here is very unsustainable, don't expect it to be New York paced. Nashville is a town all smoke and mirrors. Almost a twin of Austin Texas, a similar hyped up city.

 

Sometimes it's hard to tell. On the 1 hand you can have a client who sees you 2-3 times a week, and you know the fan are happy. But on the other hand, when that's the only person in town booking for the week, that's just not sustainable.

This is a nice sentiment, but I am not sure how it applies to the misrepresentation of an ethnicity to potential clients who might be looking for one thing and have another show up at the door. Saying you have 8 inches instead of seven is one thing.
