Any fans of Joni Mitchell's music? This is pretty big news. Joni Mitchell attended a Chick Corea concert in LA last Saturday. She suffered an aneurysm in 2015 and has been below the radar since then. Mitchell's conservator and close friends have done an excellent job of protecting her privacy, but that has meant few updates and very little detail regarding her condition for her fans.

When Eric Clapton met Joni Mitchell in 1967 at a party in Laurel Canyon he was fascinated because her technique on the guitar was unlike anything he had ever seen. She had developed it herself.

My favorite album is The Hissing of Summer Lawns from 1975. There is a song called The Jungle Line that is really unusual. She samples the Drummers of Burundi ( very unusual in 1975), and then weaves over it guitar, a line created on a Moog Synthesizer ( which was very new at the time ) which she had recently purchased. Amidst all this she interweaves a beautiful, eerie vocal line whose lyrics comment on Henri Rousseau, the music scene of the time, urban life, and the drug culture. Only Joni Mitchell could create a song like this.

I really didn't know much Joni Mitchell in depth (aside from a few of the big hits) until college in the early 80's. My roommate played Court And Spark a lot and I fell in love with it, and that led me to more of her albums.

But also, one track on that album led me on another path. Her recording of "Twisted" - which is a song I didn't know at the time, but soon found out about. (And I also found out that Mitchell got some of the lyrics wrong lol.) Joni's version was a cover of an Annie Ross "vocalese" (an instrumental jazz improv to which words are retroactively written) - and eventually I got to hear the Ross version, and subsequent Lambert Hendricks and Ross version as well - which led me to discover the amazing wealth of material recorded by that trio.

It's always cool when discovering one artist leads you to yet other discoveries.

Joni Mitchell is very gifted, but with a brittle ego. She's often pigeonholed - Canadian, female, folk, singer-songwriter... Really she is so much more - artist, musician, guitarist, producer, arranger, composer, bandleader...

It's fascinating and sad to see so much of her career and life as a reaction to being snubbed, critiqued, rejected, or under-appreciated. Her early music often documented failed relationships. She drifted away from that trope as Rolling Stone cruelly labelled her "old lady of the year." She and her peers were the foundation on which music and pop culture journalism such as the Rolling Stone formed, only to find themselves victims of these journalists' confidence in their own power when denigrating heroes became a theme. As Mitchell chose to explore jazz and other musical themes and to write socially observational songs rather than continuing with introspection she was beat down by the press -- especially with The Hissing of Summer Lawns for daring to not be Court and Spark II. After losing much of her audience and critical attention with jazz-themed Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and Mingus in the 1970's, the 1980s found Mitchell trying to fuse her music with popular styles while publicly criticizing more successful peers (Bob Dylan), alleged copycats (Rickie Lee Jones), and those she believed followed her path without giving proper credit (Sting). In my opinion Joni Mitchell found her voice as a home composer, producer and collaborator with husband Larry Klein in the 1990s with Night Ride Home, Turbulent Indigo, and Taming the Tiger. Turbulent Indigo earned a Grammy, but the failure of her marriage to Larry Klein during that period left her bitter. Taming the Tiger was a surprise, as Mitchell had become disillusioned with the music business. If Taming the Tiger was a surprise then 2007's Shine was a shock, finding Mitchell unexpectedly lured by Starbucks into creating an album of new material after nearly a decade of repackaged compilations, and two orchestral albums -- one of standards, and a double-album reimagining songs from her catalog. Joni Mitchell is a skilled and unique guitarist, an overlooked talent that shapes and defines so much of her work.

Blue and Hejira are my g0-to albums from Joni Mitchell. I'm less interested in the earlier folk music. I love much of the other material, but I'm more conscious of its unevenness and flaws. I wish The Hissing of Summer Lawns was better recorded, and with better musicians; it could have been her masterpiece. There are some great songs and duds on the '80s albums, but the production is often dated. While I think Turbulent Indigo got its Grammy just because the industry decided that Mitchell was due it's probably my favorite of her post-1980 work. Every now and then I can put on a Joni Mitchell album that I had all but written off, such as Taming the Tiger, and it will surprise me. Shadows and Light, the live album and movie from 1980, with Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Jaco Pastorius, and Michael Brecker, is an overlooked jewel.

Joni Mitchell was unlikely to record or perform again even before her aneurysm in 2015. Her health has been poor in the past 20-30 years. She has been stricken with post-polio syndrome and claims to suffer from the controversial Morgellon's disease. In a 2013 interview Mitchell claimed that her singing voice was gone. She validated that statement as she grudgingly performed a few songs live during the tribute concerts at the 2013 Luminato Festival in celebration of her 70th birthday.

I hate to see my idols suffer. It was terrible to hear that Joni Mitchell had been stricken by this aneurysm last year and found collapsed alone after several hours. I know that Joni will be recovering for years, but it's nice to know that she has a core group of caregivers and friends to support her and to know that she is making some progress.

Just found this Joni thread. Wow, I'm in. My fave (from Blue):

The last time I saw Richard was Detroit in '68

And he told me all romantics meet the same fate someday

Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark café

You laugh he said you think you're immune

Go look at your eyes they're full of moon

You like roses and kisses and pretty men to tell you

All those pretty lies pretty lies

When you gonna realize they're only pretty lies

Only pretty lies just pretty lies

Just before our love got lost, you said

I am as constant as the Northern Star, and I said

Constantly in the darkness, where's that at?

If you want me I'll be in the bar...

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine

You taste so bitter and so sweet

I could drink a case of you darling, and

I would still be on my feet, oh I would still be on my feet

A fun one..

My analyst told me

That I was right out of my head

The way he described it

He said I'd be better dead than live

I didn't listen to his jive

I knew all along

That he was all wrong

And I knew that he thought

I was crazy but I'm not

Oh no

My analyst told me

That I was right out of my head

But I said dear doctor

I think that it's you instead

Because I have got a thing

That's unique and new

To prove it I'll have

The last laugh on you

'Cause instead of one head

I got two

And you know two heads are better than one

This is a cool cover, kind of a novelty though for Joni. The lyrics were written by Annie Ross in the early '50s, over a melody from a saxophone solo.

Love this one, the fun, elegant way she captures emotion. Just the way I feel about my partner of 35+ years...

My Old Man from Blue

My old man he's a singer in the park

He's a walker in the rain

He's a dancer in the dark

We don't need no piece of paper from the city hall

Keeping us tied and true no, my old man

Keeping away my blues

He's my sunshine in the morning

He's my fireworks at the end of the day

He's the warmest chord I ever heard

Play that warm chord, play and stay baby

...

But when he's gone

Me and them lonesome blues collide

The bed's too big

The frying pan's too wide

Then he comes home

And he takes me in his loving arms

And he tells me all his troubles

And he tells me all my charms

We don't need no piece of paper from the city hall

Keeping us tied and true no, my old man

Keeping away my blues

Joni Mitchell Steps Out for Her Birthday

11/16/2016 by Billboard Staff

Joni Mitchell has made another public appearance as she continues to recover from a brain aneurysm.

The legendary Canadian singer and songwriter smiled as she stepped out with friends to celebrate her 73rd birthday last week. Mitchell wore red for her special day. The moment was captured on camera and shared from the Hall of Famer’s Twitter account on Wednesday (Nov. 16).

Mitchell has been on a long road to recovery since March 31, 2015, when she was found unconscious in her L.A. home.

Her condition was listed as life-threatening, though in late June of that year, Mitchell's attorney Rebecca J. Thyne said the artist “has physical therapy each day and is expected to make a full recovery.” She has kept a low profile since but was snapped out with friends at the Catalina Bar and Grill in late August.

Joni Mitchell and director Cameron Crowe attend Pre-Grammy Gala and Salute to Industry Icons Honoring Debra Lee at The Beverly Hilton on Feb. 11, 2017 in Los Angeles.

made a rare public appearance on Saturday night (Feb. 11), attending Clive Davis' annual Pre-Grammy Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, where she was escorted by writer and filmmaker Cameron Crowe.

The wheelchair-bound singer is being honored with a tribute video and a performance by folk singer Judy Collins.

The 73-year-old icon's attendance at the star-studded bash is a big deal, given she suffered from a brain aneurysm in March 2015 and was found unconscious in her L.A. home. Her health has been a source of concern since, though in late June of that year, Mitchell's attorney Rebecca J. Thyne said the artist was "expected to make a full recovery."

Mitchell is a longtime regular of Davis' party, a preamble to the Grammy Awards, being held on Feb. 12 this year, so her return holds even great significance for the 41st annual bash.
, award-winning songwriter Diane Warren recalls Mitchell being a fixture on the outside balcony, where she would often be seen smoking.

Among the guests who RSVP'd yes to the 2017 edition of the Davis function were Britney Spears, Neil Diamond, Chance the Rapper, Maxwell, Jennifer Hudson, Taraji P. Henson, Michael Keaton, Quincy Jones, Metallica, Stevie Wonder, Jeremy Renner and Ryan Seacrest as well as industry executives Sir Lucian Grainge (chairman, Universal Music Group), Doug Morris (Sony Music CEO), Len Blavatnik (owner, Warner Music Group), Apple CEO Tim Cook and CBS chief Les Moonves.

It makes me sad. Not only because there probably will be no more recording by Mitchell but also because her music was so bound up with my growing up and living. Though I appreciated Bob Dylan, he never struck me inside as Joni Mitchell did.

dylan was important to me.... as was phil ochs, and many other voices of that time.

but joni mitchell also resided is a very different very special place inside of me... sometimes dark, sometimes light(er), but always a place of growth, negotiation, contestation.

Oh I concur! Perfect example here:

A strange boy is weaving

A course of grace and havoc

On a yellow skateboard

Thru midday sidewalk traffic

Just when I think he's foolish and childish

And I want him to be manly

I catch my fool and my child

Needing love and understanding

What a strange strange boy

He still lives with his family

Even the war and the navy

couldn't bring him to maturity...

We got high on travel

And we got drunk on alcohol

And on love the strongest poison and medicine of all

See how that feeling comes and goes

Like the pull of moon on tides

Now I am surf rising

Now parched ribs of sand at his side

From Strange Boy, Hejira album

I have to confess Joan Baez touched me deeply with her songs, even more than Joan Mitchell. It was partly because Joan Baez sang so often in Boston and Cambridge when I was attending Boston College from 1961-1965. The live album above was released just before the Kennedy assassination. It helped me though three days of TV coverage and sadness. I only saw JFK once in person, so I admit to not being totally overcome with grief.

But, it was a terrible loss.
