Madonna's Billboard Prince Tribute

How do you pay proper homage in seven to 10 minutes to a prolific artist who fit in no one box, had a style all his own, who churned out music for almost 40 years and had a larger-than-life presence onstage?

Well, most likely you don't, because no one's been able to do it yet.

Obviously, no one had any issues in the disconsolate days immediately following Prince's death with Coachella being awash in purple light, every artist from Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen to Little Big Town covering Prince in concert, or radio stations playing selections from his vast catalogue 24/7.

The vibe was the more the merrier, albeit with little actual merriment because of all the sadness.

But last night, the first spotlighted, super-hyped awards show tribute dedicated to the inimitable artist was met with almost nothing but eye-rolls from the Internet.

Although not at thethe top of hergame vocally I thought it was well done. She and Prince have history and came on the music scene almost at the same time, so they kinda grew up together in a sense. This was probably one of the hardest performances for her to do emotionally for her.

Also one needs to remember she was singing live with no backing vocals like many singers do. Also, she had very little time to train vocally. This isn't one of her tours where planning starts probably a year in advance if not a lil longer. She was given a couple few weeks to plan for this vocally.

Hugs,

Greg

P.S. Yes, I am a fanboy but I will call her out when she sucks (Hard Candy album was her worse album) and praise her when she rocks, which is 98% of the time lol.

I thought it was well done too. It will always be hard to perform a tribute for the likes of Prince and David Bowie because of who they are. People are hard to please these days and hand out criticism left and right just for the heck of it.

But when your last tour earns $100+ million it means you know how to kick ass on stage.

To me, Erotica was her best. And yes Hard Candy is her worse. And that album cover didn't help things.

I'm not a big Madonna fan, though I like some of her music. I understand people wanting to "protect" their icons, but some of the backlash seems predictably misogynist. Lady Gaga got the same treatment following her Bowie tribute earlier this year, and while her fast-paced medley was a little disjointed she looked and sounded fine. I've been a huge music fan my entire life and know that there are a lot of men who basically only like music made by other men (with perhaps a token exception here and there). To that mindset, Bowie and Prince are "rock gods" and Gaga and Madonna are throwaway pop garbage.

I have to say she was given a golden opportunity to knock it out of the park.

Unfortunately she blew it.

Love the visual....hated the performance.

Stilted.

Odd (in a bad way).

Weak.

And off key.

She should have passed on this one....
