I need to start paying attention to keeping white shirts white, both polos and button-fronts.

Mostly I put all the light colors together, and the white ones get a mite dingy, maybe since I rarely use bleach.

Now I need to make sure they stay white.

Help me, housewives! How do you do it?

(And, no I'm not sending them to the cleaners. That's too costly on my budget.)

Use bleach, but use it responsibly! Not like the first time that I used it on a spot thinking that more would be better. Well the shirt was Snow White... not the character as my spell check just did that... but bright white. As such I thought that pouring a small quantity directly on the stain would quickly solve the problem. It definitely removed the stain. However it did so by burning a hole right through the fabric. Therefore use carefully according to the directions and and don't have anything colorful that you like within a country mile!

And always "separate colors from whites!"

+1...Always

Also... wash smaller loads when using whites, and with whites always use a quality detergent with an added bleach.

You can add a little additional liquid bleach if you choose, but only a little, and never directly into the washer. Add your bleach to the 'bleach filler' and only during the wash cycle when your washing machine instructions recommend it.

That's what I do...but results may vary...:D. If none of this works, private message Steven Kessler and ask her, that bitch knows everything.

I guess that donating your white clothes to Goodwill and buying replacements every six months is out of your budget as well.

Don't wash whites with other light colors, even grays. Wash on hot or warm. Use some washing soda with your detergent.

I forgot to mention that for white clothes I also use a detergent with bleach alternative in it. It seems to help keep things whiter. Also, the cold cycle seems to work fine and I always wash for the maximum time for which the cycle can be set. Spraying collars and obviously soiled areas with a pretreatment such as Shout helps also. If a stain is really bad one can pour at bit of detergent as a pretreatment right in the soiled area. I always keep some in a small old dish detergent bottle so a small quantity can be placed directly on the soiled area. Doing all this minimizes the use of chlorine bleach which overtime probably does not probably help preserve clothing, but can only deteriorate it. However, it seems from your posting that you are dealing with quite a dingy or discolored collection of whites and as such bleach is probably your only answer to correct that. Just a supposition on my part.

Incidentally, just for the record, I'm not the June Cleaver type so if this does not work get in touch with @bigvalboy. In spite of what he says above, from what I have heard he's actually the one who had taught Kessler a thing or two... and possibly even three or four... or more.

Of course those who play on the dark side have a different problem. How does one clean leather unmentionables that have gotten soiled?!?! The answer: by going to a reputable dry cleaner, and usually to a dry cleaner that's located a couple of towns over from where you live so nobody knows you!

I have been told, for white t shirts only, that adding a cup of vinegar to a full load helps. it did some for me. my problem is the yellowing on t shirts that happens from using underarm deodorant, which has aluminum in it.

Actually, another tip is to put some white vinegar in a spray bottle and spray the under-arm portions of a T shirt or other discolored areas. It works best if consistently done with new T shirts as opposed to those that are already stained where I did not see much of an improvement.

Damn! This is my third post in this thread! I reiterate!

Well, as far as floggers are concerned I got some personal instruction a couple of years ago about that from a couple who were named something like Messers Dom & Sub of the Year. The Dom was a bit eccentric and was really fastidious about only using one flogger on one sub at any given time. Since he had used his floggers in a demo on his sub the rest of us could not experience his technique. I had never heard of such silliness, but that was something that he consistently practiced.

His technique to "clean" a flogger after use was to hang it in a very warm environment for several hours and preferably in direct sunlight. I doubt that this actually cleaned the leather, but that is what he always did. He was also an artist of sorts and as I alluded to above more that a bit "colorfully idiosyncratic" to put it mildly!

I do have a leather cleaner/lotion that I have used on leather floggers on the rare occasions that things get soiled. In any event, it is a good idea to always keep them hanging so the tails are fully extended or else things tend to get out of shape and wrinkled looking. When traveling this means stealthy hangling them in a hotel closet. Even though hotel employees have most likely "seen it all", one does not want to hear giggling from the maids as you are walking down the hall...
