Actually this is my 4th time to be a great-uncle (hopefully practice makes perfect!!!;)). My niece had a little baby girl this afternoon. She's a bit premature (my great-niece not my niece) at about 33-1/2 weeks. But she was a good size at 4-14. She's needing a bit of help breathing. But that's not unusual they say for her gestation.

May I offer you all a virtual (candy) cigar!! Take two if you like!!

Congrats, Gman! I hope all goes smoothly.

Wonderful news! Those generational connections are the only real, proven immortality. You and this tiny human share physical, familial and cultural DNA. May she grow and thrive in a world of increasing peace and justice.

Congrats! I know that you will be a great (as in good etc.) uncle! However, I always think of you being way too young to be a great uncle in the literal sense!

Well that's very nice of you. But I'm 55 (as of January). My brother is 7 years older than I am. He was married when I was 15. Had his children 6 and then again 10 years after the wedding. My oldest nephew is almost 35 and has 3 children. My niece who just had the baby is 30 and has been married 5-1/2 years. So I don't think I'm a necessarily young (wonderful :p) great-uncle!!

It's difficult to believe. And I hadn't thought about it before, but I just did some calculations. I'm currently a few months older than my youngest grandmother was at the time of my birth -and I was the 5th out of 6 grandchildren.

Congratulations!

if you and I were women we'd be called "childless..." among other names, I hope you become a good provider, a helpful hand, and a baby-sitter for your family.

Have fun with your grands, Gman. Infants and toddlers are such a blessing even when they take it in their heads to be difficult.

I think we'd be called the 'confirmed bachelor' (code for gay in the olden days) uncles . I did occasionally babysit for my nieces and nephew in their younger years. Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere close now. And when I'm around my Greats (nephews and nieces), usually their grandparents (my siblings) or their great aunt-my sister-are around. So I'm not needed for that.

The first time I ever took care of a young infant-I had taken care of older children before -was my nephew. He was 9 months old. I was 20. He cried the entire evening. I ended up feeding him about two hours late he had me so frazzled. I remember holding him and fixing his bottle. He grabbed it the second I was done right out of my hands. :p

While I've occasionally lived in the same cities where my nieces and nephew lived for the most part I haven't. It just so happened that when I was living in Cincinnati 15 years ago my nephew who was 20 at the time won a competitive internship for the summer at Procter & Gamble.

I took him and his roommates out to eat once or twice. You should have seen the (can of )beer wall in their apartment-and he wasn't 21 yet. o_O One weekend I was out at a movie with friends at a large new mall/entertainment complex, Newport On The Levy. It was a beautiful place and new at the time. (I hope it's weathered the years well. I have a lot of fond memories of it). Anyway my group was probably 4 guys and one woman (all straight but me). So we were about to see the movie and probably were going out to eat and imbibe alcohol after. I ran into my nephew in front of the concession stand at the movie. Not really a strange occurrence. But I wasn't used to being somewhere where I would run into my (almost) adult nephew-and it was very weird for me at the time to realize that he was doing the exact same thing I was doing which might include drinking-I did mention the beer wall, right?;)

Based on your posts, and how many escorts and how frequently you used to hire them I would have never guessed we have so much in common when it comes to our families.

Congrats Gman.

So far, I have 9 great-nieces. And this is probably the experience that has reminded me I'm getting older.

I was very involved in my nephews/nieces lives ... changing diapers, babysitting multiple kids at once, taking 5 or 6 of them at a time on vacation since they were 4 years old, etc. Now I am content to visit with them and then let them go home with their parents. When my nephews/nieces have asked when am I going to start taking their kids on vacation, I quickly respond when they're in college and we can go have a drink together.

As I'm sitting here thinking about this, I'm remembering the time I took 4 of them and their boyfriends/girlsfriends to New York City for the weekend. They ranged in age from high school juniors to college freshmen at the time. Unbeknownst to their parents, each couple had their own room (before which we had a talk about what I expected from them). And then the best discussion over dinner was about how they were not to disturb their uncle later that evening, because he was going to have a visitor. We had a couple of very interesting conversations over that weekend!

(I'm surprised they're still asking if I'd take their kids on vacation!)

Oh! To be 55 again! That would give me an extra decade with which to play! Since you have those extra ten years do make the most of them. Plus who knows? You might eventually become even greater as in a great great uncle!

That would never have flown in my family. But I'm glad you and your nieces/nephews had a good time.

Oh, believe me, it would never have flown with their parents. I am the "liberal" one in the family.

Some of my siblings had a difficult time dealing with my sexuality ... but I credit their kids for being the ones to get their parents to come around on the issue.

Eleven years ago, my nephew and his girlfriend were in town and asked me out to dinner. They wanted to tell me they were getting married. In the course of the dinner, I told them about my new boyfriend. They told me to invite him to the wedding. I thanked them, but declined because my brother-in-law is a very devout, conservative Catholic and I knew it would be an issue, or at the very least, uncomfortable.

My nephew made it very clear ... that if there was someone in my life important to me, that they insisted he come to the wedding; then added that if his father had a problem with it, he didn't have to come to the wedding. It was attitudes like this, that in time have made a big difference.

My boyfriend, now my partner of 11 years, did come to the wedding. Yes, it was a bit uncomfortable at first ... but he is now simply part of the family. The oddest part now is when I learn of family news from my partner because my nephews/nieces called their "aunt", as they affectionately call him, instead of calling me.

It's Time To Celebrate!! My great-niece was able to go home today at 10 days of age. Her adjusted gestational age is 35 weeks. She's still premature but must be drinking up a storm, gaining weight, and able to maintain her own body temperature. I've only seen pictures so far. But she's a darling.
