Fascinating how they picked their choices for the top 10 opening scenes to movies. Fun to watch but I'm sure you can think of others that impacted you.

Certainly not as beautiful or stunning or impressive as these, but the opening scene to Jaws was hard to forget.... boy and girl (a little drunk), run to beach, she goes for a swim... well, she ends up a snack.

It strange to see contact on any best list except for best worst ending to a movie. I think there are so many other space movies with opening sequences. Gravity had an amazing opening shot. And what about 2001 a space oddysay?

They just give those 2 movies, just a passing mention. 2001....fabulous.

Many years ago I attended a film series at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The night they showed William Wyler's The Letter ( based on a story by Somerset Maugham ) the theater was packed, and at the end of the opening scene the audience burst into spontaneous applause. 1940 it's pretty cool.

Here is another movie with a long opening scene..maybe 10-15 min. Weekend by Godard. When I say the movie years and years ago, I found it very disturbing. It's a rather sick 'comedy' but visually interesting. The clip below was the trailer to the movie.

this isn't an opening scene but hands down my all time favorite scene both technically and emotionally that I have seen thus far. it's the long shot from atonement

Wasn't there a picture of a leg and thigh floating down to the bottom?

it's heavy handed, and not quite an opening scene, but the opening titles of The Big Chill do a great job of telling you everything you need to know about the characters.

The opening sequence to Antichrist is amazing and heartbreaking. Also, full on, close-up penetration just 52 seconds in is quite surprising. Supposedly Willem Dafoe was actually too hung, so they had to use a stunt cock.

1. I'm totally surprised Youtube keeps that clip up, what with the full penetration. I guess it's ok because its Lars von Trier. Lol (Zentrope is my fav of his.)

2. this reminds me, I read that Donald Sutherland's dick was so big, that after test audiences saw it in the "getting ready after sex" bathroom scene from Roeg's Don't Look Now, they couldn't keep from chuckling every time they saw him on screen. so they removed his penis and left in Julie Christie's breasts (I think, right?).
