I was reading the trade papers last week and since the success of Spiderman 2 at the box office. Believe it or not but there is now talk of bringing Spiderman to Broadway. There is also talk of one of the most prolific songwriters of the last twenty years, Bono of Irish Rock Group U2 has agreed to write a couple of numbers for the production. Does anybody have any thoughts on this.

RE: Spidey hands!!

Not only is Bono rumored to be penning the songs, The Lion King's (on Broadway)director Julie Taymor is attached to direct. She also directed the motion picture version of Titus, which was bloody, revolting and perfect in a Shakespearean way. And if Neil Jordan writes the book, it could be a surprise hit, like his film The Crying Game.

I'm not holding my breath for jazz-hands SPIDEY!, but B'Way seems to be attracting a younger demographic so perhaps this will pave the way.

RE: Spidey hands!!

... Hey, forget the web-slinger. I'm just jazzed that they're bringing a revival of 'A Chorus Line' back to Broadway in 2006~

Okay. Back to Spiderman El Musical:

Granted, Julie Taymor did do some amazing things on film with such arthouse favorites as 'Titus.' However, i found her work in Disney's The Lion King to be somewhat overrated and a glorified puppet show with no solid backbone, musically or otherwise.

Far be it from me to say it was unsuccessful though, as the New Amsterdam still has lines around the block to this day for cancellations. Friends tell me that the show is still sold out months in advance.

Is there a market for Spiderman: The Musical? Perhaps, but producers are surely scrambling to take advantage of the current craze for this webbed-superhero. There was also talk of a Batman musical years ago, but that never quite materialized.

I'm still privy to Batboy The Musical :) Now THAT was a good show.

Warmest Always,

>John Leguizamo for Spiderman?

Not a bad idea, but maybe a little old and lacks the sweet innocence of Tobey Maguire.

How about Neil Partrick Harris? He has the look AND he can sing!

Check him out as Lee Harvey Oswald in "Assassins."

OK I realize the Foys have been "flying" Peter Pan for like 100 years but I just don't see how anything on stage could come close to the CGI aerobatics of the film Spidey. I just don't see the point.

Oh course they could get The Spinners to do the score!

God, I should hope not. Broadway is fast becoming a Hollywood franchise. Spiderman, the Movie. Spiderman, the Ride. Now, Spiderman, the Musical. Blockbuster movies are killing the great tradition of American musicals.

I know that movies have always been inspirations for musicals, even in the past. But these were determined by talented and creative stage producers and writers. Now, they are merely determined by greedy Hollywood studio executives out to make more money out of an established brand. Very sad.
