What does 502 bad gateway mean?

Hugs,

Greg

Here's what Wikipaedia has to say:

5xx Server Error

The server failed to fulfill an apparently valid request.[75]

Response status codes beginning with the digit "5" indicate cases in which the server is aware that it has encountered an error or is otherwise incapable of performing the request [snip]

502 Bad Gateway

The server was acting as a gateway or proxy and received an invalid response from the upstream server.[79]

That's just way too technical. I have a headache now.

According to whois.com, an online identity provider, hourboy.com was created on December 3, 2003, the domain name expires on December 3, 2016, and was updated on December 3, 2015. Makes me wonder if something when "bonk" (technical term) in the renewal process.

To attempt to relieve Greg's headache, I'll try again.

If you have have a domain and you rent space in somebody's machine room, or have them outright

run the website for you, it's possible that the IP address for your domain is shared by several

other websites.

When you type http://www.hourboy.com/ into your browser , it may go to a server in the somebody

else's machine room, and from there the request is supposed to be copied and forwarded to another machine.

So, the first server is getting the request, but for some reason, it can't forward it to the real server in the

facility. It could be that the real hourboy server has a problem, like a dead disk. Or it could be that

they paid for the rights to use the name hourboy.com, but are behind on the their rent to the people

housing their server.

We can't tell for sure.

Either of those explanations probably counts as a "Bonk" in rvwnsd's book.

If y'all want to even get simpler with the explanation think of it like this. Person A speaks English and is relaying information to Person B whom also speaks English. All of a sudden Person A begins relaying the information in French instead of English while Person B does not understand French. Thus Person B is going "I dunno what he's saying".

Now the underlying reason for why this is happening can vary and can drastically change my very simple explanation. But it lets everyone understand at least the basic concept.

Ty, Kurtis! Ok, I just learned a new code phrase for my vocabulary. Whenever I have no clue what someone said, I will simply say 5xx Server Error ;)
