I remember a story about a cat from LI who suffered serious burns rescuing her kittens from a fire. She survived, was hailed as a hero, and was adopted, but IIRC some of the kittens succumbed to smoke inhalation. Their smaller bodies/lungs couldn't handle the exposure.

 

Still a heartwarming story.
