Joy - the movie

This is David O Russell's new movie (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, etc), starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro, Bradley Cooper and an excellent supporting cast. The story is based on the life of Joy Mangano (she sold mops, hangers and many other things on QVC, infomercials, etc.....she has over 100 products mostly invented by her). Joy comes from a very disfunctional family, is divorced with 2 kids, her divorced husband and her father (DeNiro) live in her basement; her Mother (Virginia Madsen) who watches Soaps all day and night, lives with her and her Grandmother (Diane Ladd), who always believed she was headed for greatness, lives there too. Joy has a dead end job and a house full of crazies. She creates a mop that is self cleaning, very absorbant and you can throw the mophead in the washing machine to clean it ('your hands never touch water or the mop').....you'll recognize the mop if you see the movie. The rest of the movie is about the obstacles she over comes to become successful, as her Grandmother always predicted. Lawrence will probably get another Oscar Nom. The downside is that the first hour is a bit slow, but there's alot of information the audience needs to know....the second hour goes like gangbusters. I recommend it.

Absolutely loved it but, then again, I find David Russell's work very compelling. I suspect Jennifer Lawrence can do anything, Bradley Cooper as well.

Just saw it. Really enjoyed it.

 

Even more than I enjoyed the shot of Channing Tatum's pretty face between another man's legs during a dance number in the trailer for "Hail, Caesar!" (the new Cohen brothers flick).

We saw it Christmas afternoon. Have to agree it is a fantastic movie (after the first half). Totally agree that you need the info from the first half. But, it wouldn't surprise me if some people didn't make it that far.
