Right now I am heading to downtown Chicago to join the protest. And why is what someone I know asked me. Why? Because I would hope that someone who cares about fucked up things happening would speak up when or if I couldn't. That's why.

Hugs,

My question is why the protest is happening now. The Cook County state's attorney has filed murder charges against the officer and the video was released (against the victim's family's wishes). The mayor, the police superintendent, the state's attorney, and (I believe) the two major newspapers have all acknowledged that the shooting was both morally wrong and unjustified and have condemned it. The officer is now on unpaid leave.

Sounds to me like the protest is a year late.

Next question: What about the black lives that are lost at the hands of people who are not police officers? Don't they matter, too? If so, where are the protests against those shootings?

Neither article addresses the questions I raised. My questions to you are what result do you think today's protest will produce in regards to the shooting and why didn't the protests occur starting a year ago, as they did in St Louis after the Ferguson shooting? I did not ask about the particulars of the shooting: I knew them. Unless I missed it, the Chicago Reporter article makes no mention of earlier protests or earlier action by the NAACP. (Shame on them if they have not intervened sooner) The Chicago Police Department should have taken action when the shooting occurred. It shouldn't take a protest to prompt them to do so. However, if you are going to protest, don't wait until after the desired action has been taken to do it. March on city hall, the county building, and on police headquarters. Hell, show up at the state's attorney's office and refuse to leave if she doesn't take action. But do it to make them act, not once they have acted.

What that police officer did was reprehensible and he should be charged with and tried for murder. Hopefully, the trial will take place in Chicago and a jury will convict him.

Thank you for the article about the moms taking back their streets. Good for them. I challenge the people who were marching down the safe streets of Downtown Chicago to join them in Englewood. Maybe they can branch off to North Lawndale. That community could use help, too.

PS: After posting this I came across this article from DNA Chicago, in which a judge raised a similar question to the one I raised:
