Walking into Carol, I think I was expecting something a little closer to director Todd Haynes’ previous 1950s set melodrama, Far from Heaven. That’s a movie I love and pretty much consider Julianne Moore’s greatest performance. Carol had a lot of live up to, but the odd thing is, Carol is remarkably different from its spiritual predecessor. If Far From Heaven is in the style of technicolor “women’s pictures” like Douglas Sirk, Carol actually has the subtle feeling of some of the international films coming out and making an impression in the late ’50s and early ’60s like Goodbye Again (underrated), Breathless, or Jules and Jim—Slow, deliberately paced, with none of the performative melodrama. Looking at Carol, there is almost an element of Hal Hartley’s romantic approach mixed into Haynes’ latest, and as unexpected as that is, I’m pretty much fine with that.

Is it just me or does Rooney Mara look and act exactly like Audrey Hepburn in her prime in the last half of the film? Both ladies look gorgeous and did a brilliant job. Love love the film!

Gorgeous movie. Unfortunately, I was totally distracted by the woman next to me. Would not sit still and munched like a cow on a giant popcorn for the whole film, scrapping her stupid fingers across the box with ever bite . Popcorn is for Star Wars. Popcorn is for Bond. Popcorn is for The Avengers. Don't eat popcorn during a movie like Carol. And don't eat pretzels, hot dogs, basically dinner, during any movie. For 90 years popcorn (occasionally), quiet candy, and soda have worked just fine. I know the response is "this is my dinner". My response is, "plan better. eat dinner before the movie." The other reply is, "This is why I watch movies at home", but I like movies in theaters I just want people to be quiet.

This is also why I utterly detest the concept of assigned seating in a movie theater. I'm looking at you, Arclight!

Beautifully shot, great performances, TERRIBLE movie...no character development, no understanding of why these women fell in love, superficial handling of important issue. That lady's popcorn eating was more interesting than that movie...save your money. If Todd Haynes didn't make this, it would never see the light of day...

If the person sitting next to you was a man I would suggest sticking your dick in his mouth so he couldn't eat any more popcorn.

That was intentional, the director tried to fashion her character as a young Audrey Hepburn type. And I agree that both gave great performances.
