A young Afghan woman was stoned to death after being accused of adultery, officials said Tuesday, a medieval punishment apparently recorded in a video that harks back to the dark days of Taliban rule.

The 30-second clip run in Afghan media shows a woman in a hole in the ground as turbaned men gather around and hurl stones at her with chilling nonchalance.

The woman, named by officials as Rokhsahana and aged between 19 and 21, is heard repeating the shahada, or Muslim profession of faith, her voice growing increasingly high-pitched as stones strike her with sickening thuds.

While our punishments are less extreme, we still have double standards here. We should spend more time dealing with our own wrongs. It's not as though our condemnation is going to bring her back to life. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone" (Saud about a similarly skewed system of punishment in the Torah). Also see Matthew 7:3-5, which is so pointed I'm not going to quote it here.

This is a cultural problem, not a Muslim one. If it were a Muslim problem, the two countries with the largest Muslim population (Indonesia and India, of which Indonesia is also majority Muslim) would have this problem too. They don't.

Are you referring to the fact that women tend to stick with men who cheat, while men tend to dump their cheating girlfriends and wives? It's unreasonable to compare state sponsored punishment for adultery to double standards that exist between two free, consenting adults who enter a relationship.

I do agree that this is not a problem in every Muslim country.

I agree with your conclusion, but that's not what I thought QTR meant. I took it to be a reference to the unequal punishments for the same crime, and that we are not immune to similar double standards.

And of course while we must never, ever fail to condemn barbaric countries or cultures that allow such treatment of women who chose to do what they want with their own bodies thereby transgressing religious/cultural laws, we must always, always recognize that we (unlike most un-barbaric) countries of the world electrocute, strangle, and/or poison citizens that transgress our laws and are condemned by the United Nations for it.
