The student and Army veteran who witnesses say charged the shooter at a community college in Oregon is alert and awake at the hospital as he recovers.

Chris Mintz, 30, was shot seven times during the Thursday rampage, but he says his main concern is about the others who were injured.

"I just hope that everyone else is OK," he told ABC News this morning.

"I'm just worried about everyone else.”

Who is Chris Mintz?

2. He’s an army vet

Those who know Chris were not surprised that he stepped up to the plate in this horrible situation. He served in the Army for ten years before relocating to Oregon, and had actually just started school at UCC this year. Chris was also on the wrestling team in high school and has done cage-fighting, so he definitely has an instinct to fight hard, which is exactly what he did.

3. Oct. 1 was a very important day for him

While Chris lay wounded on the floor, he was continuously muttering that it was his son’s sixth birthday. The army vet had just posted about the memorable event on his Facebook page hours earlier, and had recently moved to Oregon just to help raise his son, so it’s clear that the young boy means a lot to him.

4. He did even MORE for possible victims than just take bullets

Chris’ bad injuries are being talked about, but what most of the public might not know is that he was even more aggressive in his attempt to get people to safety than we originally knew about. “He ran to the library and pulled the alarms and he was telling people to run, grabbing people, telling them, ‘You just have to go,” a witness told ABC News. “He actually ran back towards the building where the shooting was.”

5. He needs OUR help with his medical bills. Please donate!

The costs for all the surgery and physical therapy Chris will need is likely to add up QUICKLY. In an effort to help fund the procedures, his cousin, Derek Bourgeois, set up a GoFundMe page so supporters can send donations. “The funds are going to be sent directly to Chris to assist with his recovery (medical bills, paying his bills while he’s out of work, childcare for his son, etc),” Derek wrote. Of course, anything anybody can contribute will be greatly appreciated by the family.

I wish my employment "ducks" were a little better aligned right now. Once the Universe starts providing more green, I'll be sending this hero some.

T

PS No, not THAT kind of green.

Besides money, I hope that Congress passes legislation that might help so that the decisions he had to make (including not seeing his son again) do not need to be made so often and that they name it after him.

Call me a skeptic. (You are a skeptic) but I do not rush to contribute to things such as this, as fraudulent requests for donations are often tied to real events. In the future, once there is a defined charity for this heroic (and let us not forget very "hot") young man, I would love contribute.

Let's make a deal with some of the right-wing-nuts in the country and in this forum, yet in this forum...

Police guarding each college in the country in exchange for background checks for everybody who wants to buy a gun to make sure he or she is not crazy. I'm sure some of them would like this deal, but unfortunately the NRA wouldn't, also we would have to raise taxes to pay for the extra police, I'm sure this subject the end of the agreement.

Send him a post-dated check.

Thanks, Marylander. Amazing story about an American hero and about the generosity of Americans, and about the beauty of the Internet.

Over half a million raised in less than a day, with an average donation right now of $32. It doesn't break anybody's piggy bank. While a tragedy like this, or worse, could have happened 20 years ago, this kind of response could not have.
