I'll accept PM's as some people may want to work the Crossword. But I don't understand the answer for 2 Down. The clue is-

Take too much of, briefly.

I actually solved the puzzle in like 35 seconds-my best ever. But it was from knowing the other answers.

I looked the word up in a dictionary and on the Internet without being able to find it. The word does show up on a crossword help site.

Gman, I will PM you later this morning, after I've done the puzzle. However, you can look at "Rex Parker does the NY Times crossword puzzle" on the internet to find not only the answers to today's puzzle, but an explanation of some of the more bizarre answers, and a critique of the puzzle. I use this site a lot, and when he asks for contributions to keep him afloat, I send him $25. (Don't want to be a freeloader, a good crossword answer with lots of vowels!)

Are we doing the same NYTimes puzzle? I've just started, but the clue for 2D is "Dub". Are you working online or on paper? Sometimes the clues vary between the two versions. (Maddingly)

Yes, the clue for 2-down today (Tuesday) is dub. Gman mentioned a "mini-crossword" puzzle. Perhaps that's different from what's in my daily dead-tree newspaper? Maybe that's some sort of on-line version?

35 seconds to do a crossword puzzle in the NYT even a Tuesday puzzle, would be championship time. Must be some sort of mini-puzzle somewhere. Could be something like stuf short for stuff

Ah I googled NYT mini puzzle and it looks to be something online only.

SPOILER ALERT

The answer is ODON short for OverDose ON.

Yes, it is the MINI. It only has 8 or so questions. Occasionally it still stumps me. I'm nowhere good enough for the actual NYT Crossword.

Oh thanks, bob. I was thinking brief was a restatement of the definition. Not telling me it was an abbreviation. I still don't like it.

Gman, do not say that you are "nowhere good enough" for the actual NYT crossword." Monday is an easy puzzle, and they become more difficult as the week goes on. Start with Monday, and you will be a Tuesday person, and then a Wednesday person in no time!!

Thank you for that information I'll give it a thought.

Not exactly an abbreviation either but actually a rather commonly heard phrase as in "I can't believe how Sam died, he "OD'd on" crack cocaine."

To the real crosswords. I'm a Thursday guy, meaning I usually sail through Monday-Wednesday and then solve Thursday but not easily. Friday is tough. Saturday often solvable but likely since I spend more time. The pattern is:

Monday - super easy with a theme

Tuesday - a bit header, also with a theme

Wednesday - ditto

Thursday - often a trick puzzle

Fri/Sat - hard and theme less

Sunday - themed and big. Often puns or some trick but not especially hard. Kind of like a Wednesday.

I get the weekend delivery of the Times which includes Thursday and even if I do not get to read it, I keep the puzzles and do them in the bathroom TMI? I have about 6 partially done puzzles in there now. Two Saturdays which need one or two answers, two Saturdays I have yet to do and two Sundays that are partially done. Friday can be tough but I usually get through it but many Saturday puzzles sit there for days until I figure out the answers. Usually one bad answer holds everything down and changing one letter can unleash a cascade of answers. The Sunday puzzles take some time due to size. Depending on my diet, I can finish all the weekend puzzles in a week's worth of BR time.

I'm just worried you might get hemorrhoids from all that sitting.

You're right. TMI.

The Saturday puzzle is a all day event. Work on it over coffee, run errands, pick it back up and do a little more, nap time, do a little more. But by bit it all comes together. Friday is hard for me as it comes 0n a workday.

I don't do puzzles in the John as my diet seems to be under control. Sit...quick dump...Charmin...flush...good to go.

I'm glad I don't need to worry about you too.
