My ass ain't going past the Mason-Dixon line for nothing.

Witnessing a total solar eclipse is totally worth the effort. The birds do stop singing and watching the darkness move across the landscape is eery. I have seen one and the effects were clear even though it was lightly overcast. I want to see one under a clear sky!

Thanks azdr, but you'll need to remind me a few more times in the next 538 days. At my age, I can't much remember what I need to do by the time the afternoon rolls around, but still looking forward to it, and Charleston is an absolutely delightful southern refuge in which to spend a few days while the eclipse passes through. Road trip!
