Just thought I'd remind everyone that on this day in 1777, Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. The flag was designed by Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Brilliant WG!

My favourite is Sousa's salute to a vibrant free press with the 'Washington Post March'. Our free press is compromised by a snarky partisanship in the Murdoch press in Australia.

That wasn't what it was about. Sousa wrote "The Washington Post" march on commission (for the princely sum of USD$25, a fortune in the day) to promote an essay contest the WP sponsored. It had nothing to do with a free press.

As a by-product, it ushered in the two-step dance and remains popular to this day. Sousa never saw anything more than that original $25.
