Has anyone looked at Backpage male escorts lately -especially New York City? These guys look like street hustlers, thugs and prison parolees including the infamous "tear drop" tattoos on a few. You only see them on Backpage ...not on Rentboy, Rentmen, M4Rnow. No I'm not being racial I'm a Latino and even I wouldn't hire some of my own people there!

You beat me to making this point. I've been uncomfortable with this thread since it started but didn't feel motivated to comment until I saw some of the photos posted.

 

It's one thing to disparage Backpage. I wouldn't look there either, but as a female-bodied person (aka ciswoman) I have different issues of personal security to navigate than most of you. Disparage Backpage as a source all you want! Just remember, it works for other people, so expect pushback.

 

I am also really tired of sniping about Backpage, Craigslist and Adam4Adam vs. Rentboy, Rentmen, and Men4Rent. Those venues appeal to different folks. Some want tried and true, some want excitement and the chase, some want poised pros, some want to find the next big thing, the new thing, or diamonds in the rough, some want kept boys, some want the BFE, some want the somewhat greater but possibly hard to quantify risk that comes with the more amateur sites. And by risk I mean both types -- having a hard time finding what one is looking for as well as the risk of being scammed, fleeced, robbed, or beaten up once an appointment is made. Use of more professional sites is no guarantee that you'll avoid either of these risks, but that's not the same thing as saying there are no differences.

 

Comparisons between the two sets of services are one thing. Sniping over which is better leads nowhere. That includes intimations that service providers who use one set of services are only looking out for their economic interests when they express concern about usage of the other set of services. I hope we can all agree that responding to peer-to-peer advertising on sites that are geared for general sale and/or non-pro hookups, such as Backpage, Craigslist, and Adam4Adam, where ads are more ephemeral and what's offered straddles the line between amateur and pro, is generally more risky overall (at the population level, not at the level of individual experience) in terms of finding someone good and not getting beat up, scammed, etc. (two slightly different issues) than responding to ads on established sex worker sites. Some people are able to negotiate those differences effectively. Others don't or don't want to. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, and so on and so on, to quote Sly Stone.

 

That leads me to my final point: If your problem with Backpage (or whatever) is that you can't find anyone on there that you're interested in and you want to start a thread about it, great. I'm not sure what it gets you other than commiserations from others with the same experience and shade from those who don't have that problem, which could be location-specific anyway.

 

But if you're going to do so by throwing around terms like thug and thuggish, which has become code for black (or maybe Latino; I don't think I've ever seen Asians described that way), and say they look like criminals, or are scary, and then other people chime in by posting photos of black men, guess what? It makes all of you look racist when the concepts "thug" and "criminal" results in photos of black men.

 

It is racial no matter what anyone may say because those are classifications that are commonly identified with a specific group. Is this because none of the people who aren't black look that way or advertise that way? Discuss that! If that's the case, consider that it may be because that's the way black men think the market defines and responds to them. That's what's meant by the term fetishization, which btw is not usually used in a positive sense. Also consider that economic need is not specific to one group before you suggest certain people are doing this because they need the money. Don't use coded terms to avoid confronting the racial implications of what's being said and posted on the thread. We can all hear the dog whistle.

 

By the way, BVB, none of the providers whose photos Adam Smith posted look black to me; they look Mediterranean, Latino/Hispanic or Asian. But I could be wrong! I've been asked if I'm Ukrainian, Italian, or Jewish when I'm none of those things, though I wouldn't be surprised if some of my mother's German ancestors were Jews who converted to Catholicism. That would explain some things that otherwise puzzle me.

I wanted to say that I also have fears regarding personal safety. I'm a 54 year old out of shape -never really in shape male. I could see how being a woman the personal safety issues could be greater, but when you consider I'm seeing guys in most cases younger, definitely in better shape, and more muscular than I am- well the risks aren't negligible for me either. Just something even we males have to consider too.

Whether right or wrong- a large number of the ads for Black escorts that I've seen have self-described as being 'thugs'. While I can see the stereotype, if a guy self-describes himself that way or the experience he provides then I think when talking about the guy- or the number of ads that claim to provide it-is totally legitimate.

 

And for the record, white escorts that look like poster children for the Aryan Nation bother me a lot too.
