descriptive. Liked Dollhouse, thought well-cast Happiness was overpraised, disliked the rest; Palindromes most of all.

I feel much the same, about each one as you say. The thing I admire is that he is willing to risk going too far, in service of seeing how far he can push his talent and vision.

Capote, talking of Updike, Styron and somebody else I can't recall, compared them with Flannery O'Connor, saying her strangeness and greatness make clear how those others, as Capote put it, are good, but "don't exceed themselves."

Solondz does, at his best, exactly that.

Separately, what you say of LaBute makes your contrast clear.

Not to compare a Goddess to a mere Talent, but yes Flannery O. managed to mix style, "Poison", and substance perfectly (I mean, my God: Good Country People?!!!); N. LaBute makes a similar effort, generally. Todd Solondz really accomplished that only once.

Unrelated: In a round about way, attributing this to a "friend", David Foster Wallace called Updike and Roth "penises with pens". I'm sure he felt differently about master Styron.

True enough about Solondz. Still I credit him for doing what he can with what he has.

Now as for Flannery! And 'Good Country People'!!! If you haven't read it, Brad Gooch's Flannery: A Life is engrossing. Marvelous recording of her reading 'A Good Man is Hard to Find' at Vanderbilt in 1959: http://www.openculture.com/2012/05/rare_1959_audio_flannery_oconnor_reads_a_good_man_is_hard_to_find.html

LOL! Although for me Roth is up there with the immortals, while I wonder if Styron will be much more than a footnote in another fifty years.

Don't know if this movie made it to this thread, but I thought of it because of Frank Bruni's OpEd on how people, gay particularly, hobble families together that have little to do with biology. It's by the same amazing filmmaker who did Steam, which is perhaps my favorite next to Brokeback. Great movie, His Secret Life:

Just saw Monster Pies: sweet but tragic coming of age love story. One of the two leads was quite handsome, Lucas Linehan:

Hey, here's a short movie you can see for free. It won't win any Academy Awards, but it stars two very hot actors, Lars Slind and Caleb Hoffman (Fell free to contact me at calebhoffman93@yahoo.com). Not the most outstanding movie I've ever seen, but if you're gay, it should give you a hard-on. Good cinematography, too.

Lars Slind:

It would be really helpful if y'all would mention where you saw these films... in a theater, on netflix, on amazon prime, or ???

A lot of us saw the movies we've listed before streaming services existed. As such, if you go to google.com and type in the name of the movie and then type "streaming" afterward, you will discover where it is available to watch online (stream), if it is. Also, in the unlikely case the movie is still in theaters, that too should be indicated in your google search results.

Totally off topic about a not-gay-at-all film, the one time I saw the movie "The Stepford Wives", it was on

broadcast television, interlaced with commercials. Suffice it to say, that was just about the *perfect* context for it :)
