The Obama administration is expected to all but ban trans fat in a final ruling that could drop as soon as next week, killing most uses of an ingredient that has been put in everything from frozen pizza to Reese’s Pieces but since deemed harmful to human health.

The agency may create some very limited exemptions, but the ruling could force food companies to cut trans fat use beyond the 85 percent reduction already achieved over the past decade — a key piece of the Obama administration’s broader agenda to nudge Americans toward a healthier diet.

I eat healthy at home and I treat myself with french fries when I'm out.

It should be very easy to get rid of trans fats, given they are uncommon in nature and are manufactured. Simply get rid of one step in the manufacturing process, right?

It's a drop in the bucket of food companies, and we'll save money at the end because of healthier people and specially children.

I remember when conservative used to make a scandal about car companies adding a seat belt in the cars and later on making it obligatory for people to wear one...

There is some good news for you. You won't be able to tell the difference. Food companies started removing trans fats from their products a few years ago when people started learning about the dangers of hydrogenated fats. Even fast food companies have been getting into the act. This is not about eliminating fat. It's usually about using a healthier type of fat (saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats). As a matter of fact, a lot of food you’ve probably been eating for the last few years have already switched to another kind of fat and you didn't even notice.

I absolutely hate the whole nanny state concept that is becoming so pervasive in our society today. I can look after myself thank you and I don’t need or want the fucking government attempting to do it for me.

yes but if you turn morbidly obese or diabetic the whole society will carry you financially.

I use condoms because I don't want to get myself infected and take money from everybody else.

Even better news we'll live longer and healthier, with a lower risk to get fat.

I am 74 years old and I am NOT now nor have I ever been morbidly obese or diabetic. I'm six foot and I weigh 180 pounds. I watch my weight and I don't need to government to tell me what I can and cannot eat. I firmly believe that we should be responsible for taking care of ourselves and not expect other (including the government) to do it for us.

I wholehartedly agree, that is, if it's also you who pays for the financial consequences like a higher premium for the extra health care that you'll probably need. I agree, if it's not others who pay for your higher bills through their health care insurance.

But the starting point, that if you want to eat unhealthy you should have that choice, I like to agree with.

Bingo. And in reality anyone who wants to eat unhealthy still can. The diet police will not show up and shove broccoli down your throat.

It's the same victim card used by those claiming "religious persecution" over marriage equality. Nobody is preventing them from going to church.

Binge on the CheezWiz! G'head! Or any other Cheez-food product. (Just don't touch the KFC because they've been trans-fat free for nearly a decade.)

Maybe you could use your hyper taste buds to work for the diet police. You could be a top secret trans-fat enforcer who goes into restaurants and tastes the chips and fries. You take one taste and find the evil food purveyor who still uses trans fats and Boom!!! You give the signal and in rush the diet police and arrest the restaurant manager, the chef and all the wait staff. You'd be like a super hero... Trans-Fat Man!

Exactly, the new regulations will just prevent food companies from making it too fatty on purpose to make us addicted to it and overweight.

in America unlike many other countries obese people are usually poor, because the cheapest food is usually the most unhealthy and the only one available in inner city poor neighborhoods.

This ain't the seatbelt laws that were fought by conservatives and it has saved so many lives and money!
