Thanks everybody for your input. What seems clear is that the facts around this issue are not clear. Up to this point, I've only exchanged emails with this escort but I plan to have a phone conversation with him during which I'll talk about my desire to have safe sex and also try, in a non accusatory way, to get info about his practices and status(es).

You don't need to ask him about his practices--it's already public knowledge. There is no point asking him about his status. Only a complete imbecile would alter his behavior based on the escort's reported status. If you are not prepared to have an encounter with him as if he were HIV positive and contagious, you need to drop the whole idea.

This much I agree with, and this should apply to any escort, not just the guy the OP is considering. Truth be told, this should apply to any sexual encounter, since, as I and many others have mentioned before, the philosophy underlying safer sex practices is to presume that every partner is potentially HIV positive and infectious (remember, those are not the same), and that is why one uses protection in the first place. In that sense, the facts around this issue are indeed very clear. The science on HIV transmission risk is out there, prevention is no longer limited to just condom use (although it's a great place to start), and if the OP takes the time to educate himself, he'll find the level of risk he's comfortable with (no prevention method is 100%), and use this knowledge to responsibly enjoy the gift that is human sexuality. I hope he has a fantastic time (whatever he chooses to do), and reports back to all of us about it!
