Pope Francis uses 'genocide' to refer to mass killings of Armenians by Turks

 

Pope Francis risked Turkish anger on Sunday by using the word "genocide" to refer to the mass killings of Armenians a century ago under the Ottoman Empire.

 

"In the past century, our human family has lived through three massive and unprecedented tragedies," the Pope said at a Mass at St. Peter's Basilica to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian massacres.

 

"The first, which is widely considered 'the first genocide of the 20th century,' struck your own Armenian people," he said, referencing a 2001 declaration by Pope John Paul II and the head of the Armenian church.

I don't think this is a place to discuss this kind of subject, I'm aware some subjects are serious and depressing but this is too much.

Marylander, Thanks for posting about Armenia. I have a friend who is half Armenian. The country, formerly part of the Soviet Union, has had a sad history even after the genocide mentioned by the pope. As with many Eastern European country the boundaries have changes many times. The best that could be said, unlike Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, Russia has not joined a separatist movement in the country as yet.

Interesting vote by Congressperson Omar. She just could not bring herself to condemn Turkey. She only saves her condemnations for Israel and various Western countries. Not sure how big the Armenian vote is back in her district but I think she lost it:)

Hypocrisy or convenience? She should have known better or maybe she does and is bias.
