In a historic move, the California Republican Party on Sunday officially recognized a gay GOP group..

The Log Cabin Republicans, a 38-year-old organization that had unsuccessfully sought a charter from the state party several times in the past, received the formal imprimatur on a 861-293 vote at the party’s biannual convention in Sacramento.

It is among the first gay groups officially sanctioned by a state Republican Party.

In the past the Log Cabins petition for a charter from the California Republican Party was strenuously fought by the CRA (California Republican Assembly) and they always had enough power (votes) to defeat the petition in the general convention. Now for those of your who don’t know what the CRA position on various is let’s just say that it makes Ted Cruz look like a bleeding heart left wing pinko liberal. They have, however, over the years, had enough votes to control the convention. What is interesting about this year is that the CRA could only garner 293 votes against granting the Log Cabin a charter to 861 for doing so. Maybe just maybe the California Republican Party is beginning to realize that California is Alabama.

I have to wonder if the drop in resistance to Log Cabin has more to do with Log Cabin's irrelevance than the CRA's deflated opposition. Although I have no inside line on the CA GOP, I do know that nationwide Log Cabin has become a non-entity. How do you drum up passionate opposition to something that fails to register even a blip on the radar? Gays dismiss LC because it's Republican, and Republicans dismiss LC because the group has no juice. After all, so few gays are Republicans, and the few who identify with the GOP are turned off by LC's leftist leanings. With no sway amongst either gays or Republicans, Log Cabin is basically a political zero. What did the CA GOP have to gain by continuing to exclude a political zero?

A couple of former Log Cabin members split from the group because of its increasingly liberal ideology to form GOProud, which had a burst of initial enthusiasm that quickly waned. There really is no group for gay Republicans. There are just too few of us to get any sort of critical mass.

I've never understood why so few gays and lesbians are Republicans. Between the staunch opposition to same-sex marriage, the repeated attempts to repeal laws protecting gays from discrimination, and the talk about us being unnatural sinners I can't see why we don't all just sign up tomorrow.

You have to realize that the most prominent gay Republicans are the closeted ones in the Senate, the House and in the leadership. There may be more gay Republicans that you'd guess.
