And yet again, none of the dancer characters will be gay. Ho hum.

What I found even odder was that their audience was always women. I wouldn't think male strip clubs primarily or solely geared to a female audience would be that common. (A la the near-fantasy of escorts and agencies whose only clients are women.)

I did not understand the fuss about Channing Tatum until I saw Magic Mike. In still photographs, he looks to me like a block of wood (sorry, I just don't find his face attractive), and his admittedly nice body didn't do enough to overcome that until I saw him move. His personality (at least as conveyed by his performances; I suspect he's another one of those actors who's essentially playing a version of himself) is also charming.

In addition to being a far darker film than I anticipated, I was disappointed with the first Magic Mike because it seemed heavy into sending a "moral message" that if one becomes a stripper, one is going to live a life full of reckless drug use and unhealthy relationships. I assume the filmmakers decided to go that route with the story because it added a level of legitimacy on top of the real reason people wanted to see the movie. "Hey, this is an artistic piece of work, not just a bunch of hot men dancing with their clothes off."

I assume Magic Mike XXL will follow down the same path, and that's too bad. The guys are still hot, though. What's interesting about Channing Tatum is how much weight he lets himself put on between roles that require him to look like this. It seems like his more typical shape is a somewhat padded guy with a muscular frame. I don't know what he does to get so ripped for these Magic Mike movies, but damn he looks good.

I don't find the concept of them dancing solely for women strange. After all, even though some of the performers are gay, aren't both Chippendales and Thunder From Down Under exclusively for women? I've also seen videos online of other "parties" where men strip (and I mean completely strip) and have sex with women who remain at least partially clothed. Some of them are clearly scripted porn, but others really do look like a bunch of horny, average looking women went to a nightclub and got carried away with the strippers.

Interesting that Alex Pettyfer doesn't seem to be in the sequel-many rumours of Channing Tatum loathing him and bad chemistry between them, wonder if it was true.....?

They might be. It has been said that Alex is very hard to work with.

Sure, but Chippendales and Thunder From Down Under don't perform in night after night in strip clubs. If they do appear in strip clubs (which I'm not sure of), it's a special appearance.

Wasn't aware of the vids you mention, but still, my guess is those were ladies' nights and not something that took place every night.

Also, women as a group don't have as much economic wherewithal to spend money this way as men do and when they do may weigh it differently against other forms of expenditure.

As for the storyline: My recollection is fuzzy, but wasn't it only Alex Pettyfer's character who was into drugs out of all of them? I found that believable -- not so much because he was a stripper, but because of the culture he came from and grew up in. What I was more annoyed by was the lack of imagination shown in the movie's conclusion. Magic Mike's girlfriend (wasn't that Pettyfer's character's sister) was a kinder person than the other main female character in the movie, but she was so distressingly conventional in her thinking that I liked the other character better. What had been a sufficiently engrossing slice of life movie turned into a romcom without the com. That really bummed me out.

That said, there's a good chance I'll see the sequel for the dirty dancing and buff bods, especially if Matt Bomer is in it. I couldn't tell from the trailer if he is.

Yep - Matt Bomer is there - look at about 0:52 in the clip, when they're on stage.

Thanks! You're right. With the quick jump cuts, my mind was too busy scrambling to keep up to notice that it was him. Sometimes I think that editing style has a similar effect on me as strobe lights have on epileptics.

I thought I'd spotted him in the scene near the end where they're all onstage, but wasn't sure.
