What is a stink-eye, and why would you use it to someone who is just trying to be friendly?

 

To me, it doesn't feel like they're being friendly and here's a pretty good stink-eye example:

My grandfather wanted me to sign up for the Air Force, as he had retired from. I wasn't confident I wouldn't be outed and booted out, so didn't, but I often wonder how my life would have been different. My parents had considered sending me to an all-male military style boarding school. I have a really good idea what would have happened there.
