I go to the gym about 5-6 days a week. I see the Trainer three days a week,

and when we do upper body workouts, I go into the pool and walk for 45 minutes to an hour.

On the days I don't meet with the trainer, I'm in the pool for an hour to 75 minutes,

and play with the floats.

My question: I tend to chat up the lifeguards (who are getting used to my random

questions). With one exception, they are all a little chubby. One of my favorites

actaully swam the other day, and I note that, while he carries too much weight,

he also has very nice musculature.

So, what gives? Was I influenced too much by Gaywatch in my younger days?

These guys are in their late teens / early twenties, and I would expect them

to have a better sense of health.

So why are they chubby?

So why are they chubby?

They're normal.

They are not in competition, or starring in a movie, or doing a magazine shoot, so they're not focused on amping up muscle mass and minimizing body fat.

They're normal.

Swimming a fair amount is not a great way to loose (subcutaneous) fat. There some evidence that the increased exposure

to the water even in a heated pool being rather cooler than body temperature may promote the deposition of it (as insulation).

Of course, if you're a Michael Phelps and swim 6+ hours a day at elete athlete energy output, you'll be burning a lot of

calories, but damn, swimming makes you hungrier than hell. One is almost compelled to restore those calories!

I used to swim with the gay division of SF Park & Rec Masters (a.k.a Tsunamis) and one of the fastest guys on the team

was not svelt .

Good responses to the question. Swimming has a lot of great health benefits, but it will not necessarily automatically burn off the fat that normally develops around the belly, abs, etc., as one ages. For guys in their teens and early 20s and into their 30s, it is "normal" to accumulate some body fat in those regions, and as Deej says "they are normal". It takes a lot of effort and regular excercise to create those perfect "abs" and other muscles. Yes, there are a few men whose genetic makeup, diet and regular exercise regiem will produce those lean, muscular bodies that are so admired, but most of us will never look like those "ideals" we might like to be.

Maybe because they have lives? :) Most guys don't fret about their looks and having the "perfect" body every second of every day, it's actually being obsessed with one's appearance and being in the gym constantly that's out of the norm. By the way, having extremely low body fat and huge amounts of exercise (assuming one isn't using enhancers such as steroids which make it even worse) isn't "healthy" if by health you mean living a longer, relatively pain free life. Like everything else there's a happy medium, and the "perfectly sculpted" bodies so many of us seem to think are perfect are nowhere near normal. Interesting topic, kind of reminds me of the way so many women have allowed themselves to think that high fashion models that are anorexic are the ideal they should try to attain.
