At a time when I think that theater and film critics go out of their way to say someehting nice about the show they are reviewing, I was heartened to see the opposite in this week's New Yorker magazine.

Theater critic John Lahr says of the much admired performer Bill Irwin in his new show "The Harlequin Studies": "But I'm sorry to report that, judging by (this show) he couldn't shine the shoes of the old clowns in whose footsteps he think's he's following."

Ouch.

And then film critic Anthony Lane bemoans the fact that the new film "Wonderland" focuses on John Holmes' post-porn life. He concludes his scathing review of the film by saying: "Compared with the grim and fractious brutality of "Wonderland," two hours of heaves and splatters from Johnny Wadd would come as an innocent delight." My sentiments exactly!

My least favorite critic is the Times A.O. Scott. My favorite was Frank Rich, the "Butcher of Broadway!" Who do you like?

I find I almost always agree with Roger Ebert. I never read a review until after I see the movie, but I check out Ebert's "stars" before I plunk down my $10 for the show and another $10 for the popcorn and coke.

For reviews on everything else in the world, I depend on Michael Musto of the Village Voice, although he and I disagreed on "Pirates of the Caribean," him saying he doesn't like movies based on amusement park ridess.

Personally, I think Musto was jealous because Johnny Depps mascara looked better than Michael's.

The only movies I really care to watch are those produced by BelAmi studios and I have yet to see Ebert review them.

I read Peter Rainer in New York Mag and The New Yorker's

David Denby. The New York Times drives me nuts. Wasn't A.O. Scott

the only reviewer in the nation to give Blair Witch 2 a good review?

Currently I recommend 1) Lost In Translation 2) To Be And To Have

and 3) American Splendor.(Very well done, but left me a bit cold)

The Station Agent and School Of Rock have gotten very good press

and Mystic River, openning Wednesday, has great buzz as well.

Obviously I'm a bit Artzy Phartzy.
