Someone I know said this recently, and I think it's worth spreading around:

 

"H.R. - A joke that is a job."

 

Boy, do I agree. If there's ever a stupid regulation or a pointless form to fill out, Human Resources is usually behind it.

Although I have bashed HR myself, I must say I am impressed with the HR department at my company. Last year I had to start a discipline process with an employee. I called the designated HR person thinking I would get pushback. When I described his behavior and performance, the rep said "My, God, you should have called me months ago. I could have saved you months of pain and suffering." I sent her my notes on the guy and she turned around a firm warning letter and asked if I wanted her help delivering it. I didn't, but the guy got the message and shaped up. I was amazed by her helpfulness. I had to report a peer who verbally abused someone and the same rep was very helpful with me, called the employee to reassure her that she was in no trouble and offered her assistance in making the situation better, and proceeded to make make my peer and her boss understand that she was never to behave in that fashion again. Our recruiters are variable and the people who handle layoffs are absolutely wonderful. I understand this is atypical, but thank heavens they work for us.

 

PS: Another joke is "You can't spell 'Who Cares?' without H R"

Wow friendsofsheila I'm not sure what employer or HR got you so pissed at an office within organizations but there's something else not being told. I've had some wonderful HR experiences that have assisted me out of very sensitive issues, you either might work for an employee with a non sensitive HR office of been the subject of some HR actions

I had a great HR department at the old job. I was being harassed by a regional manager over the years, and he was trying to force me out. HR told him that if he wanted to create an unacceptable working environment, then they would side with me, and it was a fight that he would not win. I was eventually forced to file a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company, and I prevailed. They went so far as to dispute the companies version of events, and sided with me in the lawsuit, and provided the lawyers with the countless calls and emails I sent them complaining of the situation. I will miss those girls in HR.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought you had posted on numerous occasions that you were a major player in your family owned business of real estate or real estate development. The above statement seems to contradict that. If those girls in HR (who work for the company) over the years and it had to go to legal action against the company they worked for, I think that graphically proves Friendofsheila's point

Yes you are mistaken. And once again completely incorrect in regards to my employment history. AND incorrect in your assessment of the interworkings of HR in my company and how and why the lawsuit came about.

Not necessarily. Regardless how good the HR consultants are, the company's policy dictates the course of action taken when an employee harasses another. Harassment policies are often approved by the owner of the company or the board of directors. My current employer requires all employees to watch a training webinar, logs the time spent watching it, and does not give the employee credit for taking the course unless they spend the required time watching it and pass a very lengthy test. Failing to take and pass the course can lead to termination. In addition, the course explicitly states several times that an employee who violates the anti-harassment policy will not be defended by the company.

I love it!

 

I got pulled into an HR meeting last week. They had 2 people tell me that while so-and-so is out on medical leave this month, my coverage of a certain desk will be the same. If there's a problem with coverage, they might ask me to work at the desk for half-days.

 

What a fucking waste of time. They could have done this by phone.

 

The place is dying and frankly, it looks like these people are scrambling desperately to justify their jobs.

Throughout my career, I've found that HR has been very helpful when it comes to performance issues and promotions. Perhaps that is an advantage of having a good training manager when I started my career that makes me well-prepared when I have those conversations with HR. Another factor is probably that I have always worked at large corporations where HR is a priority.
